Your tortoise’s diet should consist of grass and hay as the staple foods. Dandelion, collards and mustard greens should also be included, along with prickly pear cacti pads and sweet desert apples (sliced in small portions). Tomatoes contain potentially toxic glycoalkaloids called solanine and chaconine that should be avoided.

Pretty Pets contains more sugar than Mazuri, and should not be fed on an ongoing basis due to possible digestive and kidney issues for tortoises. Instead, try finely chopping together fruits, vegetables, and greens (our Tortoise Table Plant Database is here to assist with that) into meals that your tortoise will enjoy eating on an ongoing basis.

Pretty Bird® Large Tortoise Nuggets

Food specifically tailored for large tortoises that provides them with essential nutrition. Featuring 8 percent protein, 3 percent fat and 13 percent fibre content – they will be enjoyed by all land tortoises! Best fed once or twice weekly as an addition to their overall diet as pellet foods contain too much protein and sugar that may lead to digestive issues for most tortoises if fed too regularly.

Make sure that your tort has access to plenty of fresh greens and discontinue feeding him fruit, as tortoises do not digest fruits correctly and eating too many can result in serious health problems for them. Instead, cut up cactus pads, carrots or kale and mix it with some water on days he refuses food so he remains hydrated; eventually he should resume eating on its own – be patient as tortoises can be stubborn creatures!

Pretty Bird® Large Tortoise Pellets

At times, pellet type foods are used as an incentive for tortoises who refuse to eat the healthy greens and fruits you offer them. While occasionally supplementing his diet (once or twice per week at most) may be acceptable, regular consumption could lead to health issues for your tortoise as these pellets contain high concentrations of protein and sugar which could cause issues for most tortoises.
