Quick Facts

  • Type: dry kibble for adult indoor cats
  • Maker: Champion Petfoods, which has been part of Mars since 2023
  • Made in: the USA (US bags are produced at the company’s Kentucky kitchen)
  • Bag sizes: 4 lb and 10 lb
  • Main proteins: chicken, herring, turkey, and rabbit
  • Calories: 3,670 kcal/kg, or 414 kcal per cup

Ingredients

The first ten ingredients are chicken, chicken meal, herring meal, oat groats, whole peas, chicken fat, ground miscanthus grass, turkey, whole green lentils, and whole chickpeas. Further down the list you will find whole herring, rabbit, chicken liver, chicken heart, cranberries, kelp, taurine, and three probiotic strains.

A few things stand out:

  • Animal protein leads. The first three ingredients come from chicken and fish. Acana says 65% of the recipe is animal ingredients.
  • It is not grain-free. Oat groats are the fourth ingredient. The recipe has no corn, wheat, or soy.
  • It contains legumes. Peas, lentils, and chickpeas supply carbohydrate and some of the protein.
  • The fiber is added on purpose. Miscanthus grass and lentil fiber are there to help hair pass through the gut.
  • It uses natural preservatives. Mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract keep the fat from going rancid.

With the water removed, that works out to about 40% protein and 16% fat on a dry matter basis. That is high protein and moderate fat for a dry cat food. The 5% fiber ceiling is on the high side, which fits the hairball claim.

What We Like

  • Named meats and fish head the ingredient list, with organ meats included.
  • High protein helps indoor cats hold on to muscle.
  • Added fiber and probiotics support digestion and hairball control.
  • Taurine, EPA, and DHA are guaranteed on the label.
  • No corn, wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives.

What to Watch

  • It is calorie dense. “Indoor” does not mean low calorie here. Free-feeding this food is a quick route to weight gain.
  • It is still dry food. At 10% moisture, it adds very little water to your cat’s day. Many vets suggest feeding at least some wet food.
  • The price is premium. Expect to pay more per pound than for grocery store brands.
  • It is for adults. Kittens and pregnant or nursing cats need a food labeled for growth or all life stages. Check the nutritional adequacy statement on your bag.
  • It is not a medical diet. Cats with kidney disease, urinary problems, or food allergies should eat what their vet recommends.

How Much to Feed

Acana’s feeding guide for a 10 to 12 pound cat is:

  • Spayed or neutered: 1/2 to 2/3 cup per day
  • Intact: 2/3 to 3/4 cup per day

Use a real measuring cup or a kitchen scale, and split the daily amount into two or more meals. If your cat is gaining weight, cut back a little and check again in two weeks. Our guide to cat food for weight loss has more tips.

When you switch to Acana from another food, mix the two over 7 to 10 days, adding a bit more of the new food each day. Keep fresh water out at all times.

Who Is It Best For?

Acana Indoor Entrée suits healthy adult indoor cats whose owners want a meat-rich kibble and are willing to measure meals. It is a reasonable pick for cats prone to hairballs, although fiber is only part of the answer. Regular brushing helps too. If fiber is your main goal, compare it with other options in our guide to high fiber cat food.

It is less suited to cats that already carry extra weight and graze all day, cats on a tight budget, and cats that need a prescription diet.

Bottom Line

Acana Indoor Entrée is a well-made, high-protein dry food with clear labeling and useful extras like fiber, probiotics, and omega-3s. Its main drawback is calorie density, so portion control matters. Measure every meal, pair it with wet food if you can, and it should serve a healthy adult indoor cat well.
