Ducks can eat alfalfa pellets in small amounts as a fiber-rich snack, but alfalfa should not replace a balanced duck feed. Think of it as an occasional extra, not a main food.
Are alfalfa pellets good for ducks?
Alfalfa is a nutritious legume that contains protein, calcium and vitamins. Ducks will peck at soaked pellets, and it can add variety and greens in winter. But pellets sold for rabbits or horses are not formulated for waterfowl, and a diet built mainly on alfalfa will not meet a duck’s needs for niacin and balanced protein.
What a duck’s main diet should be
- Complete feed. Use a waterfowl or duck feed. Adult layers need about 16 percent protein, and ducklings need more in the first weeks.
- Niacin. Ducks need about twice the niacin of chickens, and a shortage can cause leg and bone problems in ducklings.
- Calcium. Layer feed has more calcium than ducklings should have, so do not make it the main feed for young birds.
- Grit and water. Ducks have no teeth, so they need grit and water deep enough to wash feed down.
How to offer alfalfa pellets
- Soak a small handful in water for several minutes so the pellets soften.
- Offer it in a shallow dish or scatter it as a treat, no more than about 10 percent of the day’s food.
- Remove leftovers within a few hours so they do not mold.
Do not feed
- Moldy or musty pellets of any kind
- Pellets with medications, unless your vet says so
- Large amounts of dry pellets that could swell in the throat
Note that alfalfa is a normal food for rabbits, not toxic to them. Rabbits should still get it in the right form and amount for their own diet.
Better snack ideas
Leafy greens, peas, chopped lettuce, oats and duck-safe seeds are great choices. See what Pekin ducks eat and nutritious seeds for ducks for more ideas.
Bottom Line
A little soaked alfalfa is fine for ducks, but a quality waterfowl feed with enough niacin should be the foundation. If a duck is limping, weak or not eating, call an avian or poultry vet.
