No, not an adult lion. Even the largest snakes in the world are limited by the size of what they can swallow, and an adult lion is far heavier and stronger than any prey a python or anaconda has been reliably recorded eating. Stories of a snake killing a lion make for good tales, but they do not hold up when you look at how snakes feed.
How snakes swallow large prey
Snakes do not chew. They swallow prey whole, and their lower jaw is made of two halves joined by stretchy ligaments, so the mouth can open very wide. The skull bones are also loosely connected, which lets a snake take in animals larger than its own head. Even so, there is a limit: a snake generally eats prey that is a fraction of its own body weight, and very large meals can take days or weeks to digest.
What the biggest snakes really eat
Large pythons and anacondas eat animals such as birds, rodents, wild pigs, small deer and similar mid-sized mammals. Reticulated and Burmese pythons are the heavyweights, and there are records of them taking prey up to deer size. Nothing in the record suggests a snake can take on a fully grown lion. For a closer look at captive diets, see our guides on Burmese pythons and ball pythons.
How constriction works
Constrictors do not usually crush bones or simply block the windpipe. Research on constriction shows that tight coils stop blood from circulating, which causes very rapid collapse in the prey. That is an effective method for small and medium animals, but it depends on a snake being big enough to wrap and hold its target.
Venom and big animals
Venomous snakes use venom mostly to subdue prey they plan to eat, and for defense. A bite can be serious for a large mammal, but how serious depends on the species, the amount of venom injected and where the bite lands. You may see claims that one cobra bite kills a lion in half an hour; there is no solid source for that, so it is best treated as folklore.
Who wins if they meet?
Almost always neither animal wants the encounter. A lion that finds a snake will usually back away or ignore it, and a snake will usually flee or freeze. Our related post asks the reverse question, do lions eat snakes?, and explains why lions leave them alone.
Bottom Line
A snake cannot eat a lion. Snakes swallow prey whole, and the biggest species top out at deer-sized meals. If you want to understand snake feeding for a pet, focus on correctly sized prey and species-specific care instead of dramatic wildlife stories. Our guide to treats for snakes is a good next read.
