Can Tortoises Eat Potatoes?

It is best not to feed your tortoise white potatoes. They are starchy, low in the calcium tortoises need, and the skin, green patches, sprouts and leaves contain solanine, a natural toxin found in plants of the nightshade family. A tortoise does much better on grasses, weeds and leafy greens.

Why potatoes are a poor choice

Most tortoise species are grazers that thrive on a high-fiber, low-protein, low-sugar diet. A potato is mostly starch, with little fiber and almost no calcium. Feeding starchy foods often can contribute to weight gain, digestive upset and an imbalanced diet, and it takes the place of foods that do your tortoise more good.

The solanine problem

Solanine builds up in the green parts of a potato, in sprouts, and in the leaves and stems. A potato that has turned green or started to sprout should never be offered to any pet. Cooking does not reliably remove solanine, so cooked potato is not a safe workaround.

What about sweet potatoes?

Sweet potatoes belong to a different plant family and do not carry the same solanine concern. They are still high in sugar and starch, so they should be an occasional, small treat rather than a staple. Offer a few thin raw shreds a handful of times per month at most. The leaves are often a better choice than the root. Our detailed post on whether tortoises can eat sweet potato covers portions and preparation.

Better everyday foods

A healthy tortoise diet usually centers on weeds and leafy greens such as dandelion, plantain and clover, plus grasses and safe flowers. See our lists of flowers and plants tortoises like to eat and calcium-rich foods for tortoises for ideas. Different species have different needs, so check the care guide for your own species, such as our Hermann’s tortoise food list.

If your tortoise ate a potato

A small bite of a clean, peeled, ripe potato is unlikely to cause serious harm, but watch for lethargy, loss of appetite or diarrhea. If your tortoise ate green skin, sprouts or leaves, or you notice symptoms, contact an exotic-animal vet.

Bottom Line

Skip white potatoes. They offer little nutrition and part of the plant is toxic. Keep sweet potato as a rare treat, and build your tortoise’s diet around fibrous greens, weeds and a reliable calcium source.
