Dry tortoise food can be a useful part of the diet, but it should supplement fresh weeds and greens, not replace them. Choose a grass-based pellet and soak it before feeding.
What to Look for in a Pellet
- Grass, hay or alfalfa as the first ingredients
- High fiber and low protein and sugar
- No added dyes, and no fruit, sugar or animal products
- A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio above 1:1
How to Feed It
- Soak pellets in warm water for a few minutes so they soften and add hydration.
- Offer them a couple of times a week alongside fresh greens.
- Remove uneaten food within a few hours.
Why Fresh Food Still Matters
Dandelion, plantain, clover and other weeds supply fiber, moisture and variety that pellets cannot match. See our large tortoise food and homemade tortoise food guides.
Bottom Line
Use a quality, soaked pellet as a backup and let fresh weeds lead. Provide calcium and UVB, and call a reptile vet if your tortoise stops eating.
