Do Lions Eat Snakes?

Short answer: not usually. Lions are big-game hunters that go after zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and other large grazing animals, and a snake is a small, risky meal that is rarely worth the effort. Snakes do share the African savanna with lions, so the question comes up often, and the details are more interesting than a simple yes or no.

What lions actually eat

Lions are obligate carnivores, which means they need meat to survive. A pride typically hunts medium and large hoofed animals, and a single kill can feed several lions. Smaller animals are taken opportunistically, and lions will also scavenge carcasses. Because a snake offers very little meat and can bite back, it is not a typical target.

Do lions ever eat snakes?

There is no good evidence that snakes are part of a lion’s regular diet. A lion that meets a snake will most often ignore it or move away, and a curious young lion may swat at one. Eating one would be a rare event rather than a feeding habit. If you want to see which predators do eat snakes, our guide on whether jaguars eat snakes shows how a different big cat handles reptile prey.

Can a snake hurt a lion?

It is possible. A venomous snake that is stepped on or cornered can bite, and a bite to the face or paw can be dangerous to any mammal, depending on the species and how much venom is delivered. Large constrictors work differently: they hold prey and squeeze, which stops blood flow rather than simply crushing the body. Most snakes, though, would rather flee than fight something as large as a lion, and confirmed cases of snakes killing adult lions are very rare.

Why the myth keeps going

Stories about lions and snakes tend to blur together animals from different continents and habitats. Many of the claims you will see online, such as lions routinely hunting pythons or cobras, are not backed by field observations. If a source gives no study, park record or named observer, treat the claim with caution.

What about snakes as prey for other animals?

Many animals do eat snakes, including birds of prey, mongooses, honey badgers, and other snakes. If you keep a pet snake, the more useful question is what your own animal should eat. Our posts on what Burmese pythons eat and whether a snake can eat a cat cover prey size and safety in more detail.

Bottom Line

Lions do not normally eat snakes, and snakes are not a meaningful threat to a healthy adult lion. Lions hunt large hoofed animals, and both species generally avoid each other. If you keep a snake at home, base its meals on appropriately sized prey and a vet’s advice rather than on wildlife myths.
