Mealworms
Feeding your leopard gecko Super worms is a great way to supplement their diet. They contain extra fat and other nutrients that are good for egg laying. Also, superworms are great sources of protein, which are essential for juvenile and baby leopard geckos. Protein helps build healthy muscles and organs, which in turn keep your reptile’s body moving and functioning properly. You can feed your leopard gecko Superworms once or twice a week.
Though superworms are not dangerous for your gecko, it may cause digestive damage if not handled properly. Superworms should be handled with care to prevent injury, since the pincers may get damaged in the gecko’s stomach. Before feeding, crush the heads of the worms so they will not be able to chomp on your reptile.
You should choose the right size and type of worm for your pet. Larger animals can eat three to four live worms per feeding, while smaller ones can eat only a single one.
Superworms
Superworms are great for feeding your leopard gecko, but they are not the right choice for every gecko. Superworms are five times larger and wider than mealworms, and are not as nutritionally complete. In addition, they contain more chitin, the fibrous substance that forms the outer shell of the worm. This is bad news for geckos, as they can choke on them. To make things better, only feed your gecko the right size superworms.
While superworms are a great addition to a leopard gecko’s diet, it is important to remember that they contain fat and should only be fed in moderation. Overfeeding your gecko can lead to gut impaction, regurgitation, and lethargy.
When feeding superworms to your pet gecko, hold them up to a light. If they are transparent, they are fine. Otherwise, they should be avoided. Do not feed your gecko superworms harvested from a pupa. Always remove any leftover food from your gecko’s cage after feeding because it may cause mold growth, which is bad for your pet.
Waxworms
Feeding your leopard geckos waxworms is not a difficult task. The best time to feed them is shortly after their regular meal. This helps prevent them from becoming too overweight. Moreover, make sure to provide fresh water for them after every feeding. Ideally, you should feed them once every two or three days. However, if you notice that they are not gaining weight, you can feed them more often.
Waxworms are a good source of calcium for your gecko. However, you should remember that the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in waxworms should be about 2:1. If the ratio is too high, your gecko could suffer from metabolic bone disease. To avoid this condition, try to feed your gecko calcium powder instead of waxworms.
Waxworms should be fed to healthy adult geckos once or twice a week. However, if your gecko is underweight, suffering from an infection, or has a dropped tail, you can feed them up to five waxworms on a regular basis. Be sure to record your gecko’s weight to help you adjust the frequency of feeding. If your gecko is allergic to waxworms, you may want to reduce the frequency or eliminate them entirely.
