Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for turtles, supporting healthy skin, mucous membranes and ducts (tubes that transport fluids like urine or saliva) within their organs. When turtles don’t get enough of this vitamin, they may develop squamous metaplasia which impedes normal tissue function.
Signs of this condition include swollen eyelids, excessive skin growth and thickened shells. A turtle’s veterinarian will conduct a skin biopsy if these symptoms are present to determine if your pet has Vitamin A deficiency. If so, dietary supplements will likely be given to ensure adequate intake of this important nutrient.
