Mealworms
Mealworms are an ideal protein source for reptiles such as geckos and can be easily found and affordable; you can feed these to your animal without risking their wellbeing.
Mealworms are highly nutritious food items for reptiles and can provide essential vitamins and minerals. Both bulk purchases as well as local pet stores sell these healthy worms that will dote on them with great success!
Easy and no refrigeration needed: these fish make excellent feeders! Just make sure that their stomachs have been filled up with their appropriate diet (at least 24 hours prior to feeding them) so they’ll be ready to go!
Leopard geckos can consume mealworms, though their consumption should be done carefully as their tough exoskeletons may make digesting these snacks challenging and their high fat content may contribute to obesity.
Crickets
Crickets make for excellent food sources for spotted geckos as they contain protein, carbohydrates, fiber and an array of vitamins and minerals that the species requires for health.
Male crickets sing to attract female crickets as potential mates, using delicate hindwings and leathery forewings called tegmen that fold and rub against one another to produce that characteristic chirping sound.
Male and female crickets both possess small ears on their front legs that enable them to detect the sound of a mate’s song, or “chirp,” depending on weather conditions. These chirping sounds can often be heard throughout large areas of ground.
Spotted geckos typically enjoy feeding on crickets as their main prey item; however, they will also enjoy eating mealworms, wax worms and silkworms. When feeding spotted geckos crickets to their leopard gecko ensure that they have been gut loaded and dusted with high-grade calcium powder to provide all of the essential vitamins and nutrients they require from these crickets.
Dubia Roaches
Dubia roaches make great food for spotted geckos as they contain both calcium and protein in abundance, with lower fat than crickets or mealworms, making this option great for their overall health and well being.
These insects come in various sizes from 1/8″ when young to 1 1/2″- 2″. You can purchase them easily at pet stores or online for very reasonable costs.
These feeder insects make an excellent addition to the diets of both leopard geckos and spotted gecko species, offering nutritional support without jumping or flying away like other feeder insects might do. Not only are they easy to catch than crickets; their shape also makes catching them much simpler!
When feeding dubia roaches to your spotted gecko, it is essential that the correct size matches its age and metabolism. Baby geckos 0-4 months should receive between 4-8 roaches daily while adults need approximately 16-20.
Pinky Mice
Pinky mice, or newborn mice without fur, can be fed once or twice monthly to female geckos as food sources.
Leopard geckos need protein sources that will bulk them up and provide enough nutrients to produce eggs and nurse their young properly. Furthermore, their milk provides essential vitamins and minerals for their offspring.
However, they can quickly become obese if fed too frequently; to prevent this happening it should only be fed occasionally.
Dubia roaches make an excellent diet choice for spotted geckos. With soft shells that make them easy to consume and digest, and low levels of chitin content making them more nutritious than crickets, dubia roaches offer great sustenance options for their pet owners.
Leopard geckos naturally feed on crickets, but for an increased level of protein and reduced fat per 10 grams they often prefer insects such as ladybird beetles. You can easily purchase these insect foods in pet stores and online.
