Betta fish require a diet high in proteins to remain healthy. Bettas do well on various commercial fish food options tailored specifically for their digestive systems and nutritional requirements.
Goldfish require a more balanced diet than their betta cousins do; though betta food may make for tasty snacks occasionally, it shouldn’t become their primary or sole source of protein.

Vegetables
Goldfish feed on various foods found in nature such as insects larvae, worms and small species of fish. When kept in aquariums they typically consume flake feed pellets as well as live bloodworms or brine shrimp for their nutrition needs; in addition they often enjoy fresh vegetables and fruit as treats!
Goldies are typically excellent eaters, yet require more fiber in their diet than pellet or flake food can provide. Therefore, it’s a good idea to occasionally introduce nutritious treats for them such as cooked (and skin removed) frozen peas and chopped lettuce as healthy treats for betta fish.
Carrots are another ideal vegetable to offer to goldfish, though ensure they have been cooked until all hard bits have disintegrated to prevent getting lodged between their pharyngeal teeth when eating them. Sheets of dehydrated algae also offer some vitamins and minerals; just be cautious not to feed too many of these snacks or you might clog their swim bladder and cause problems with buoyancy.
Bloodworms
Goldfish require a diet rich in proteins. Live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, krill and brine shrimp may be added occasionally as treats; however, their presence should not replace pellets or flakes specifically designed for bettas as these contain much higher concentrations of proteins than carbohydrates that would harm goldfish health.
If you plan to feed your goldfish bloodworms from a pet store, make sure they are disease-free and fresh before taking them home. When handling them, always wear rubber gloves because these fish possess four fangs in their mouth that could bite if they feel threatened by humans.
Goldfish live in aquatic environments that feature insects such as insect larvae, water-bound flies, crustaceans and small aquatic animals; in captivity however, their diet must replicate that found in nature for maximum happiness and health. If your pet goldfish has been captive-raised it’s essential that this diet be recreated so he remains happy and healthy!
Other Foods
Goldfish should not eat betta food on a regular basis; it may only be given as an occasional treat. But providing your goldfish with this source of nutrition could cause kidney and swim bladder issues in their fish.
Instead, it is advised to offer your pet a wide variety of food such as veggie pellets, blood worms and leafy greens as this will provide ample fiber, protein, nutrients and vitamins necessary for their wellbeing.
Occassionally, you can even feed your goldfish some fresh peas; just ensure that they have been softened before giving them to your pet by either soaking in warm water for 10-20 minutes or microwaving for 60 seconds in the microwave. Or try finding special gel food made up of multiple ingredients suitable for goldfish in pet stores; these make an excellent alternative to traditional dry foods.
Feeding
Goldfish in the wild feed on crustaceans, plants and insects so it is ideal to provide them with food similar to their natural diet. In addition to special goldfish food such as pellets or flake food, they will happily consume peas (with shells removed), boiled vegetables and bloodworms as treats.
When selecting food for your goldfish, make sure it is labeled as fish food and has an abundance of nutritional content and no preservatives that could potentially harm their health.
Be wary not to overfeed your goldfish as this can lead to several health issues including gill irritation and cloudy water. Instead, aim to give a small portion of food each time that you put your goldfish back in its tank.
As a guideline, goldfish should only consume as much food in 1-2 minutes before it goes bad in their tank. This will prevent overfeeding and maintain a cleaner environment in your aquarium.
