Angelfish are omnivorous fish, meaning that they need both plant and meat foods for sustenance. Angelfish particularly enjoy high-protein flakes and pellets but also thrive on frozen and freeze-dried treats.
Frozen food provides long-term storage benefits and eliminates the risk of parasites and bacteria breeding on live food sources that could spread into an aquarium environment. Frozen foods are great for providing young angelfish with nourishment as well as adults alike.

Brine Shrimp
Brine shrimp (Artemia salina) are small crustaceans that aquarium hobbyists can raise as food for their fish, providing valuable nutrients and live food sources for them. Found in saltwater lakes away from the ocean, brine shrimp thrive under conditions too salty for other organisms to live. Dormant until conditions allow it, these crustaceans sleep until hatching out as nauplii larvae.
Once they emerge from their eggs, nauplii feed on algae and microorganisms; alternatively they may also receive food such as brewer’s yeast, wheat flour, soybean powder or hard-boiled egg yolk.
Brine shrimp provides the closest natural diet for many different species of fish, making this food convenient and tasty. Plus, its simple preparation makes this food appealing to most fish species!
Mysis Shrimp
Mysis shrimp is an essential component of many marine aquarium diets, containing essential fatty acids and amino acids as well as chitin-based roughage that provides essential nutrition. Mysis shrimp can be purchased live or frozen and is readily consumed by most fish and inverts (including seahorses ).
Mysid crustaceans (Order Decapoda) closely resemble true shrimps in size and behavior, and are sometimes known as “opossum shrimps” due to the brood pouches at their legs resembling marsupial mammals.
Mysis shrimp makes an excellent food source for cichlids and other freshwater community fish. Feed small portions multiple times throughout the day to mimic their natural grazing behavior and result in healthier, more vibrant fish.
Mealworms
Mealworms, sometimes referred to as larvae of darkling or mealworm beetles, are popular feeding supplements among reptile and fish breeders as well as backyard birdwatchers who like to stock their feeders with them.
Mealsworms are packed with protein and iron. Not only are they nutritionally dense, they’re also delicious! Mealsworms can be enjoyed either raw or ground into mealworm powder for easy addition into many different meals for flavoring and protein boost.
Researchers have recently discovered that mixing heat, sugar and mealworms together can create an authentic meaty flavoring suitable for convenience foods. Their research was presented this week at the American Chemical Society Fall Meeting 2022 by researchers at Wonkwang University in South Korea who compared aromas produced by mealworms throughout their lives with those generated when cooked – producing aroma compounds similar to what would be found in cooked meat and seafood such as pyrazines and alcohols which produce flavor compounds characteristic of cooked proteins such as pork or seafood dishes.
Frozen Bloodworms
Frozen bloodworms offer your fish an easy, hassle-free option to provide nutritious nutrition without disturbing water quality over time. No thawing required! Simply drop into your tank easily! They make for less work over time than live bloodworms!
Before feeding frozen bloodworms to fish, they should first be thawed out in a small container filled with some of their aquarium water in order to drain off any extra juices and strain to remove inedible particles left from shipping material. Once they’re defrosted and strained, feed as many bloodworms per minute so as not to overfeed – as this may lead to water contamination and disease later on. It is wise to follow any advice provided on product packaging or consult fish-keeping professionals when doing this step.
