Product Reviews
At our testing station, we conducted extensive trials with pre-mixed wild bird seed blends to see which ones best attracted backyard birds, with black oil sunflower seeds standing out as the clear winner. They are high in fat content with thin shells that most seed-eating birds can easily break through, plus generate minimal waste below the feeder while drawing multiple types of species to their feeder – as well as being relatively cost effective options among our options tested.

Product Ratings
If you want a low-maintenance option that will attract the most species, go with black oil sunflower seeds. They are high in fat, thin shells that almost all seed-eating birds can crack (striped sunflower seeds have thicker shells), and they generate little waste below the feeder. During our testing, feeders loaded with black oil sunflower seeds disappeared faster than any other kind. We recommend this mix for hopper, tube, and platform feeders.
This blend includes safflower seeds, which cardinals love, and other oil-rich seeds that will draw other colorful backyard birds. It should also draw chickadees, finches, titmice, nuthatches, and grosbeaks. This is a great choice for year-round feeding, and it should be used in large hopper and platform feeders. It has a lower per-pound cost than Wagner’s Classic Blend but is not as economical as black oil sunflower seed. Our lead testers found that the safflower in this mix can be bitter, so it may require mixing with tastier options until your birds eat it regularly.
