Guppies and goldfish make peaceful coexisting species in a tank, but there are a few things to consider before putting these two together.
First, ensure the water temperatures in your tank are suitable for each species. Both prefer warm waters, so keep the temperature between 68deg and 74deg F.

They are omnivores
Goldfish in the wild eat a variety of foods such as plants, algae, aquatic insects and small crustaceans. When kept as pets they are usually fed dried flake or pellet food made specifically for fish.
They also eat frozen tubifex worms, mosquito larvae, bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp as well as vegetables such as boiled peas, lettuce and spinach for their diet.
Goldfish feed on plant matter as well as sediment that has settled over time, disrupting its balance and adding phosphorus to the environment. This causes changes to the water’s chemistry, leading to algae blooms.
Goldfish have an omnivorous feeding style, which may explain their vibrant colors. They require both plant and animal proteins in their diet for healthy growth, making them opportunistic feeders who will eat whatever is available – even when it may not be what they require.
They are greedy eaters
Goldfish have a voracious appetite, often pushing other fish aside to consume food you add into their tank. Once they start munching on something, they won’t stop until it’s gone – this behavior may lead to digestive problems in your aquarium.
They should be fed a varied diet that includes flake and pellet foods as well as live foods like brine shrimp, blood worms or tubifex worms. Additionally, you should provide them with plenty of vegetables and fruit for extra fiber intake.
Many owners feed their goldfish commercially prepared flakes and pellets which contain various dry foods, bulking agents, minerals and vitamins. Unfortunately, this is not a balanced diet for goldfish as they lack essential fiber needed for growth.
They are fin nippers
Guppies are omnivores, meaning they must consume both plant matter and meat for sustenance. In the wild, guppies feed on algae, mineral particles, diatoms, aquatic insect larvae and other small microorganisms to get all of the protein and minerals they require for healthy growth.
Guppies in fish tanks typically feed off plants and algae found in ponds, lakes, streams or rivers. These nutrients provide them with essential energy for long periods of time in low oxygen environments.
If you don’t have any live foods available for your guppies, goldfish flakes may work. Just be sure to crush them up into smaller pieces so they’re easier to swallow. However, this should only be a temporary solution as guppies cannot go long periods without food.
They are not tank mates
Maintaining goldfish and guppies together in the same aquarium is not recommended. They require different water temperatures, can become aggressive towards each other, have different diets, and pose other potential hazards.
Goldfish tend to be voracious eaters, taking all of the food before their smaller tankmates get any. This can be especially problematic for guppies since they move slowly and tend to feed from the bottom up.
Guppies have the tendency to nibble at their tank mates’ fins, which could result in serious harm or death. Therefore, it’s essential that goldfish and guppies only be kept with other fish that share similar temperaments and behaviors.
To avoid issues with guppies and goldfish, make sure your tank has a consistent temperature, plenty of hiding places, and superior filtration. Alternatively, keep them separate until they’re ready to be introduced together.
