Tortoises can eat parsley, but only occasionally. It is not toxic, yet it is high in oxalates and low in fiber, so it works as a small garnish rather than a regular green.
What Parsley Offers
Parsley has vitamin A and K and some calcium. The problem is its oxalate content, which can bind calcium and make it harder to absorb. Fed too often, it can contribute to calcium deficiency and kidney stress.
How to Feed It
- Offer a few chopped sprigs no more than once a week.
- Mix it into a bowl of weeds and leafy greens.
- Wash it well, and choose fresh over dried.
Better Everyday Choices
Most tortoises do best on dandelion, plantain, clover, grasses and bitter leaves like endive and escarole. See our bell pepper guide and favorite foods of tortoises for more options.
Bottom Line
A little parsley is fine as a rare extra. Keep calcium, UVB and fiber at the center of the diet, and call a reptile vet if your tortoise’s shell or appetite changes.
