Salmon & Insect Larvae Granules
Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae have recently emerged as an alternative protein source in aquaculture diets, potentially replacing fish meal as it offers superior nutritional and environmental sustainability credentials.
Researchers examined the effect of various fractions of BSF larvae (full-fat, defatted and de-chitinized) on gut microbiota in Atlantic salmon. Six experimental diets were formulated to meet NRC [44] nutritional requirements; including one commercial-like control diet; three using various BSF meal replacements such as full-fat BSF meal or oil or exoskeleton; two featuring various BSF lipid fractions as meal replacements; and two diets using different BSF lipid fractions.
Results demonstrated that diets containing full-fat BSF meal or BSF lipid fraction were found to increase the presence of Bacillaceae bacteria in salmon gut, consistent with previous reports. Furthermore, such diets promoted growth of Oceanobacillus and Actinomyces bacteria which are both involved in breaking down chitin into bioavailable forms for digestion by salmon.
