Crested Gecko Diet
Crested geckos need a variety of nutrients. In nature, they eat insects and fruit for sustenance; crickets, roaches and hornworms provide ample protein and vitamin intake; for optimal results however it is important to gut-load insects 12-24 hours before offering to your crestie to ensure digestion takes place easily and the correct Ca:P ratio is achieved. Waxworms may also be offered occasionally since their soft exoskeleton won’t lead to impaction issues.
Dark leafy vegetables such as kale, collard greens and bok choy are an ideal source of low oxalates and high beta-carotene content. Furthermore, crested geckos will eat most fruits but limit citrus and berry consumption due to their higher acid levels.
Meal replacement powders (MRP) can also make an ideal part of a Crestie’s diet, being both easy to use and offering a balance of essential nutrients. Popular brands include Repashy and Pangea – these powders can even be mixed with water to form pastes or smoothies that Cresties often enjoy eating!
Crested Gecko Care
Crested geckos are lively reptiles that require plenty of room for climbing and playing. Add branches, driftwood, cork bark and vines as climbing structures in your terrarium for these active reptiles to use, along with fake and real plants such as birds nest fern, staghorn fern or dwarf tree fern as enrichment while helping with humidity regulation.
Cresteed gecko cages should contain substrate that is safe for their consumption, such as coconut fiber bedding or sphagnum moss. Sand, wood chips and walnut husk should all be avoided as these substances could prove hazardous if swallowed by your pet.
Your crested should always have access to water in a shallow dish; they will drink from it by sucking up drops off of the cage walls or taking occasional baths in it.
Crested geckos require humidity levels ranging from medium to high, so hygrometer and thermometer should be set up to monitor these conditions, and at least twice per day you should mist their habitat for 30 seconds at each misting interval.
Crested Gecko Food
Crested geckos are omnivorous animals that consume an array of insects and fruit for sustenance, providing their bodies with all of the vitamins and minerals essential for health.
For crested geckos, the ideal food source is a powdered meal replacement like Pangea Crested Gecko Diet or Repashy Banana Cream Pie MRP that can be mixed with water to form a paste and fed daily. These freeze-dried MRP’s contain essential vitamins and minerals as well as an ample selection of insect protein sources to provide daily sustenance.
Night time activity from crested geckos will necessitate offering them MRP’s, while providing a dish of water will allow them to hydrate by licking drops from walls and decorations in their enclosure.
Many crested gecko owners supplement their MRP’s with crickets, roaches, super worms and wax worms to increase insect protein and add variety in their crested geckos’ diets. Some crested gecko species may otherwise refuse food that contains insects – offering these additional insects could help mitigate this behavior.
Crested Gecko Supplies
Crested geckos (commonly referred to as “cresties”) are popular pets among reptile enthusiasts. These nocturnal and arboreal reptiles feature special toe pads which enable them to quickly traverse vertical surfaces – even climbing upside down!
Crested Geckos require an environment with ample climbing space. Provide branches, driftwood, cork bark and bamboo as a source of hiding places for these reptiles to explore and climb on. Some owners add silk or sturdy live plants such as Epipremnum (pothos), Philodendron or Dracaena that can be placed at different heights and orientations within their terrarium for maximum flexibility and enjoyment by their pet.
Crested Geckos require a moderate to high humidity level in their enclosures. Make sure to get an accurate thermometer and hygrometer so you can monitor its daily changes, and mist the terrarium with chlorine-free water daily if possible; alternatively you could purchase an automated misting mister/fogger which will automatically mist its contents at regular intervals for you.
