Chicken Jerky

Chicken jerky treats provide an all-natural, low-caloric alternative to rawhide chews for your canine companions. Not only are they tasty treats that offer multiple health benefits, they’re also great training rewards that help clean their teeth! Jerky is made by cutting raw chicken breasts into strips before dehydrating to kill bacteria while lengthening shelf life and creating more appealing flavors in each treat.

Homemade chicken jerky can be more cost-effective and has less salt content than store-bought varieties, however, homemade varieties should not be fed to dogs suffering from pancreatitis or digestive disorders.

Avoid purchasing any jerky made in China to protect the health and wellbeing of your dog. Jerky from China has been linked with illnesses and deaths of pets; as recommended by the FDA, only purchasing US-produced jerky. Avoiding China will protect their wellbeing while preventing digestive issues in their system.

Duck Jerky

Oven-roasted duck breasts are one of the top selling treats at Polkadog stores, providing an ideal alternative to chicken jerky for dogs with allergies.

Since 2007, FDA has received more than 360 reports of illnesses in pets after eating Chinese-made jerky pet treats, most often showing symptoms of Fanconi-Like Syndrome (FLS), which causes loss of key nutrients from their bodies to urine through glycosuria and normoglycemia, two indicators of FLS. Necropsy results from six affected dogs also demonstrated changes to kidney tubules which is evidence of FLS.

As part of its attempt to determine what was causing these illnesses, FDA expanded testing of imported jerky treats made with poultry-based ingredients to include poultry-based products. As part of these tests, conducted by Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), which confirmed antibiotic and antiviral residues on certain samples; thus prompting field investigators to seize any treats found with illegal antibiotic or antiviral residues. As a result, an Import Alert was issued instructing field investigators to seize any such treats found containing illegal antibiotic or antiviral residues immediately for detention by field investigators in accordance with this Import Alert directive issued by FDA to detain.

China Made Jerky

FDA has received over 5,000 reports of illness linked to Chinese-produced jerky-style pet treats that have caused vomiting, diarrhea and kidney/urinary disease – as well as several cases of Fanconi syndrome in animals that ingested such treats.

These reports focus on imports of chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky from China that has caused illnesses and deaths among pets. While the FDA hasn’t been able to pinpoint a particular ingredient as being responsible, they advise pet owners to avoid all treats manufactured there.

Signs of illness associated with the consumption of jerky treat include reduced appetite, vomiting and diarrhea with blood or mucus; more serious consequences include pancreatitis, GI bleeding and kidney failure as well as the possible appearance of Fanconi syndrome – an hereditary kidney condition which can be acquired. Seek veterinary assistance immediately if your dog exhibits any of these symptoms and consider requesting a urine sample from your veterinarian to test for FLS through Vet-LIRN in order to assist FDA in understanding what may cause these illnesses.

High-quality duck breast jerky treats provide nutritious snacks for dogs and cats alike. Slow oven drying ensures this treat reaches a chewy consistency without artificial flavors or preservatives; additionally, its gluten- and soy-free composition make it suitable for those with allergies.

BLUE Nudges Jerky Cuts are slow oven-dried and easy to tear, offering your pet a healthy chew that they’ll both appreciate and find enjoyable. Tender duck meat contains protein for muscle development while rice and vegetable glycerin provide natural humectants while offering nutrients such as vitamins B, D, E and K; calcium; iron; zinc and phosphorous are included as nutritional elements in each chew.

Local veterinarians have not witnessed any cases he can directly link to jerky treats, so they suggest substituting other treats or fruits and vegetables instead until scientists figure out the source of this illness. Many affected dogs show glucose in their urine indicating Fanconi syndrome – an illness in which substances that should normally be absorbed into blood are instead released into urine as waste products.
