If you want to attract and breed turtle doves, you should think about what they eat. Turtle doves are herbivores and their diet consists of seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables and herbs. You can plant wildflowers in your strips to provide these natural foods.

Planting wildflowers in turtle dove strips
Several studies have suggested that planting wildflowers in strips around farmland may help to attract the turtle dove. This is especially true in the case of a species such as the turtle dove, which is known to be sensitive to farmland habitats.
Turtle doves are obligate granivores, which consume a wide range of plant species. They feed on low-growing open vegetation, seeds, and weeds. Foraging areas are typically low altitude, often combining open ground with hedges or woodland.
Some farmers are deliberately planting arable wildflowers in “turtle dove strips” as part of their farming operation. In addition, some farmers have created feeding strips of bare soil to distribute supplementary seed.
Herbaceous species
Turtle Doves are birds that feed on the seeds of many species of wild plants. They breed in a wide range of habitats including forests, grassland and farmland. The diet may include cultivated seeds, such as sorghum, sunflower heads and pumpkin seeds, as well as wild plant seeds.
Turtle Doves feed on a variety of seeds, but the earliest seeds are eaten during the first half of the breeding season. During the second half of the breeding season, they eat late-ripening seeds.
The number of turtle doves in a region can be influenced by several factors, including nesting site, landscape, climate and availability of food. There is evidence that their distribution pattern is influenced by sustained warm temperatures.
Virgin plastic granules
Virgin plastic granules are decreasing in surface waters of the Atlantic and southwestern Indian oceans. The decline in granules was exhibited on New Zealand shores and on Bermuda.
To find out more about the role of plastic in seabird ecology, scientists conducted a study on the turtle dove. The dove’s diet includes a wide variety of seeds, ranging from cultivated species to wild species.
The first year, virgin plastic granules were found in only 5.65% of the birds. In the second year, the proportion of granules declined to only 2.95 percent. For the third year, a total of 4.65% of the birds had granules.
As the Turtle Dove’s diet changes over the breeding season, the amount of granules consumed will be a function of the availability of food. A large proportion of the seeds the doves eat are wild plant seeds.
Movements between nesting sites and foraging areas
The movements of turtle doves between their nesting sites and foraging areas are a complex and multifaceted process. Although a large number of factors have been suggested to contribute to breeding success, food abundance and reduction of the availability of resources have typically been deemed as the most important.
In this study, the relative importance of the three most common metrics were assessed. They were: (i) the relative magnitude of the number of hatchlings that reached a pelagic habitat within four days of hatching; (ii) the relative magnitude of the number of adult hatchlings that return to the same site in subsequent years; and (iii) the ratio of the mean number of nesting turtles to the average number of adult hatchlings.
Habitat suitability of breeding males
Turtle doves feed on seeds from a wide variety of wild plants. They prefer to breed on grassland and woodland habitats. But, they are also capable of breeding in areas with mixed or unmanaged habitats. The best management practices are therefore to maintain heterogeneity in the landscape. This can be achieved by incorporating patches of farmland, grassland and woodland into an integrated management plan.
Turtle doves can be found throughout Europe and Africa. The range is large and varied. There are many species in the population. A few are in decline. It is important to ensure that there is adequate food and water for them to thrive.
Diet of adults and juveniles
Turtle Doves are birds that feed on a wide variety of plants. The birds’ diets vary from year to year. A major factor in this variation is the age of the animals.
Adults and juveniles have different feeding patterns. During the breeding season, mainly herbaceous species appear in the diet, but this is not the case during the rest of the year.
In addition to the herbaceous species, turtle doves also eat seeds of other wild plant species. Some of these are important seed sources for the Mediterranean forest.
Turtle doves are found in a wide variety of habitats. They usually nest in wooded and unmanaged areas, while others prefer farmland.
