Chickens cannot digest and absorb gluten from their feed, leading to digestive and skin issues and other ailments. Furthermore, this deprives them of getting essential nutrients needed for brain, body structure, muscle growth and feather development – this is why we carry Country Organics poultry grower feed that is both non-GMO, gluten free and soy free.

Country Heritage Organic Layer Mash is an excellent option for egg layers who wish to avoid gluten, wheat and soy in their diets. Use it either exclusively or as part of a pasture diet; an adult egg-laying hen typically consumes 2 1/2 pounds each week!
This mash contains organic corn, barley and rye grains as well as flaxseed, alfalfa pellets and kelp meal from organic farming practices, flaxseed oil from sustainable resources as well as Fertrell Poultry Nutri-balancer (Monocalcium Phosphate, Organic Dehydrated Kelp Meal, Salt, DL Methionine and calcium carbonate supplementations for Folic Acid Thiamine Mononitrate Pyridoxine Hydrochloride Biotin Mangagne Sulfate Ferrous Sulfate Zinc Sulfate Copper Sulfate and Sodium Selenite) plus Diatomaceous Earth for optimal performance.
Non-GMO
This feed is free from gluten, wheat and soy – an ideal option for people living with celiac disease and other medical conditions that necessitate non-GMO diets. Made using organic ground corn and non-GMO soybean meal (mechanically extracted), the hens will have access to more digestible food sources. Chickens that consume grains that are poorly digested or absorbed can develop digestive issues and lack essential vitamins & nutrients for strong muscles, feathers, organs, healthy skin & eggs. Organic ingredients provide better bone structure as well as more balanced energy for their wellbeing. Ingredients include organic ground corn, flax pellets, yeast, aragonite, crab meal and fish meal as well as Fertrell Poultry Nutri-balancer Monocalcium Phosphate/Sodium Bentonite/Salt as well as DL Methionine/Sodium Carbonate for Calcium Iodate as well as zinc Sulfate/ Ferrous Sulfate/ Copper Sulfate and Sodium Selenite for balancer purposes.
Medicated
Most feed companies provide both medicated and non-medicated chicken feed options. The former contains Amprolium to protect baby chicks against Coccidiosis – the number one killer of baby chicks which is highly contagious – appearing as red or orange feces tinted by it and leading to lethargic behaviour, weight loss and delayed development.
Chicks are born with a very immature immune system and must build it from scratch, unlike mammals that gain some natural protection through gestation and the first milk they receive from their mother. Baby chicks don’t enjoy either of these advantages.
Because of this, medicated starter and grower feeds have become more widespread. To maximize effectiveness of any medication used on chicks, be sure to follow all instructions from the feed mill when using it, since switching back and forth between medicated and non-medicated feed may cause your baby chicks to build immunity against its use.
Supplements
Quality gluten-free laying feed will include wheat as its energy source; soft red or kamut wheat should be chosen because it provides more protein (15 percent) and magnesium than hard red or standard white wheat; additionally it also contains an amino acid known as lysine that aids egg production. A good mix should include organic cracked corn, whole wheat oats and organic flax pellets (with cultured alfalfa extract, flax pellets from Oregon Flax Pellets Inc, Aragonite crab meal meal etc) plus basic mineral mixes like dicalcium Phospase powder (available by mail order from UPCO Pet Supply St. Joseph MO or other feed dealers), plus kelp meal to supply vitamins and minerals.
