Fancy goldfish require a high-quality, low-protein diet with plenty of fiber to stay alive and well. Overfeeding can lead to fish death.
Hikari Blood Red Parrot+ pellets provide color enhancement by providing natural ingredients that pass easily through their digestive systems. In addition, consider offering some blanched vegetables such as zucchini and carrot slices (goldfish love to nibble on these) once or twice each week as added fiber sources.

Protein
Goldfish are omnivorous creatures and require a balance between protein and plant matter to keep their digestive tract working efficiently. Goldfish also enjoy eating insects, their larvae, crustaceans, plant roots, leaves and trailing algae for sustenance.
Goldfish tend to forage along the bottom, where air tends to collect. When swallowed during feeding time, this air can end up in their swim bladder and cause bloating and swimming issues. Kenta Gas Release Formula Sinking Pellets were designed to prevent this by stopping goldfish from inhaling too much air while feeding. They contain high-quality animal and plant proteins like krill, whole menhaden fish meal and spirulina along with multivitamins designed to promote metabolism and enhance digestion.
Overfeeding can be one of the primary causes of aquarium deaths and it is difficult to accurately gauge exactly how much to give goldfish. To avoid overfeeding, only give your goldfish as much food as they can consume within 2 minutes or it will begin decomposing, polluting your tank with ammonia and nitrites while using up vital dissolved oxygen required by their survival.
Fat
Goldfish are omnivorous fish and require some fat in their diet, such as vegetable oils, algae or whole wheat products. Good gel foods can be purchased from most pet and fish stores – these gels sink directly to the bottom of an aquarium instead of floating at its surface like most flakes and pellets do.
Frozen foods provide another option for goldfish feedings. These high-quality and clean foods typically come in the form of slabs of frozen food that you break apart into smaller pieces before feeding your goldfish. Frozen foods contain protein and fatty acids as well as a special probiotic that re-conditions waste particles into something our tank filters can handle more effectively.
This high-protein and high-fat formula is designed to promote both body and nuchal (head) growth in goldfish regardless of head gene status. The formula includes multivitamins to promote metabolism and digestion stimulation as well as Omega-3s and essential fatty acids for overall health benefits.
Fiber
Goldfish require a diet rich in proteins to develop strong bones, scales, fins and body tissues. Their digestive tract also needs plenty of fiber; to get this ratio correct you should feed them a fish food designed for Goldfish that contains Spirulina which provides proteins iron beta carotene vitamins minerals as well as other vital ingredients.
Feed your Goldfish only the amount they can consume within 30-60 seconds when feeding flakes or pellets to them, otherwise uneaten food rots in their aquarium or pond, producing ammonia and depriving the Goldfish of necessary oxygen to survive. High protein diets tend to foster rapid growth among goldfish; too much may overwhelm beneficial bacteria managing nitrogen cycle systems in their aquarium or pond and lead to water quality issues due to an overload.
Calcium
At Hikari we recommend feeding goldfish a diverse diet to maintain good health and to support proper digestive functioning. While designed for blood parrot cichlids specifically, their floating pellet is also excellent at satisfying fancy goldfish species with numerous color enhancing ingredients like chili peppers, phaffia yeast, krill, astaxanthin canthaxanthin and marigold flowers to bring out brilliant colors in your goldfish and beneficial probiotics to aid digestion and strengthen immune defenses against diseases.
Kenta is a high-protein, low-fat fish food designed to prevent gas buildup in goldfish digestive tracts. These sinking pellets include multivitamins to promote metabolism and organic calcium that strengthen fins and tails while stimulating intestinal movement. Kenta can be mixed with other high protein food sources to create a balanced diet; we suggest offering it three to five times a week.
