Vegetables and Flowers
Box turtles, as omnivores, require both plants and animals for optimal health. A high proportion of their diet should consist of vegetables – particularly dark leafy greens like mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens and dandelion greens which should make up an essential portion. Lighter green vegetables (iceberg lettuce or head lettuce with celery are less nutritious and should be avoided as these could lead to deficiencies and other health concerns.)
Vitamin A-rich vegetables such as yams, sweet potatoes, squash and cooked carrots should also be included as these will assist the turtle’s body in absorbing and using calcium effectively.
Avoid feeding store-bought flowers regularly as part of their diet, as these tend to be heavily fertilized and treated with pesticides. Instead, offer non-toxic food products like EarthPro DragonFuel that contains various healthy flowers, leaves and fruits that your turtle may enjoy eating.
