High Fiber Diet
A diet rich in fiber has numerous physiological health advantages. High-fiber foods typically consist of low calorie options like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds as well as beans and lentils – in addition to being great for gut health they may reduce risks for heart disease and diabetes as well.
Sulcata tortoises require a diet rich in grass fiber to ensure they develop healthily and remain strong over time. When fed inappropriate food sources, their growth can become excessively fast; their shells could develop bumpy bumps; health issues could develop that dramatically decrease lifespan.
Although sulcata tortoises love fruit, it’s best not to give them too much. Too much fruit may alter their gut pH and kill off beneficial bacteria which are essential for digesting grasses they eat and extracting the essential nutrients from them. A diet high in fiber may also help eliminate yeast or fungus which cause outbreaks or acne breakouts.
Low Starch Diet
Low starch diets can be beneficial to horses of all ages, particularly those that are excitable, difficult to handle or suffering from muscle disorders. Furthermore, it may assist those that are overweight or insulin resistant.
Mazuri tortoise pellet, known as LS, does not contain as much corn or soybean as its predecessor; rather it features predominantly ground timothy hay that provides natural vitamin E as well as probiotics for enhanced digestive health and probiotic support.
As a guideline, it is recommended to feed 1-4% of body weight daily in food for tortoises and reptiles of each size, depending on environmental temperature, activity level and life stage of each individual animal. Diet can be served either dry or moistened; soaking optional. Feeding fresh grass hay and vegetables (no more than 5-7% total diet), fresh clean water and fresh grass hay/vegetables in moderation as part of this hay based extruded pellet format provides more natural feeding environment suitable for herbivorous reptiles such as Gopher Tortoises, Sulcata/Galapagos tortoises as well as Chuckwalla/Uromastax Lizards among others.
Low Moisture Diet
Sulcata tortoises live in semi-arid environments where grasses provide their only food source, making a low moisture diet perfect. Too much moisture in their food could pose numerous problems for tortoises, including increased rates of gastrointestinal issues. Low moisture foods have also been implicated in several high profile outbreaks such as Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella and Shiga toxigenic E coli outbreaks linked with powdered formula milk and flour respectively.
This LS version of Mazuri tortoise food features less corn and soybean, more ground timothy hay and natural vitamin E with live probiotics for added digestive support and no ethoxyquin. These pellets may be offered either dry or moistened; smaller tortoises tend to prefer moistened versions as it’s easier for them to consume them this way – although only minimal water should be needed to do this.
Rep-Cal or powdered limestone (calcium carbonate) supplements may also be added for extra calcium supplementation; however, this isn’t essential as sulcata tortoises can get all their needs from their diet alone.
Variety of Flavors
Although you should provide your tortoise with a diet consisting of healthy greens such as kale, dandelions, weeds, grasses and succulents as part of its regular food source, it may also benefit to offer commercial tortoise food in pellet form as this provides vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients to the shelled reptile.
Some of these foods are specifically tailored to support your tortoise’s digestion while others contain yucca for ammonia odor reduction. Some even come in dry pellet form so as to make supplementing their diet simpler for you.
Your tortoise should receive small portions of commercial tortoise food five days a week, leaving two days per week without food to allow his/her metabolism to catch up and give your pet time to relax and rejuvenate.
