Goldfish need a diet rich in both plant matter and animal proteins to remain healthy and thrive, otherwise they risk becoming constipated and developing bloat. If too much meat is eaten without enough plant matter, however, constipation or even bloat could occur as a result.
Pet stores may sell freeze-dried food for goldfish that contains black soldier fly larvae, krill, algae, squid and plant proteins – as well as adding color-enhancing carotene – that provides nutritional support and color enhancement.
Try feeding your goldfish vegetables and fruits such as peas, spinach, kale, grapes, oranges, watermelons and apples as part of their daily food regimen. When giving these items, be sure to steam and remove shells first before giving it to them.
