One of the most frequently requested specialty feed rations for chickens are those free from soy or corn products, and this article will look into what this means and how best to approach its formulation.

Grass-Fed

Poultry producers frequently ask poultry farmers whether chickens can truly be grass-fed. This question stems from Dr. Gundry’s low-lectin diet; however, because chickens are not insectivores and serve as opportunistic foragers they will eat other things than just grass.

As grass does not provide complete protein or all the essential vitamins and minerals required by chickens to thrive, supplementation is often necessary in their feed. When choosing whole grain supplements that have not been ground down for their feed, however, as grinding destroys nutritive value due to oxidation occurring while sitting.

Quinoa is an excellent dietary supplement choice for chickens, being highly digestible and readily consumed by them. Furthermore, its essential vitamins and minerals not found elsewhere make it an excellent way to add extra nutrition. When mixed with grain and mineral powder powder it will provide them with a complete high-quality protein diet.

Non-GMO

Customers increasingly prefer organic, non-GMO feed without soy for various reasons, including soy allergies. Many individuals simply cannot tolerate soy at all and must avoid it completely.

Our soy and corn free layer feed contains only high-quality, non-GMO ingredients like wheat, peas, barley, canola meal, Redmond conditioner and diatomaceous earth – plus we add essential oils such as oregano thyme and garlic!

Hens do not produce their own amino acids in their gut, so they must obtain them through diet alone. Fish meal and vegetable oils such as safflower, sesame or sunflower provide essential amino acids such as methionine for proper functioning of hens’ bodies. YolkProud, an all-natural ingredient designed to encourage vibrant egg yolks, and LifeGuard are also included in the feed, providing prebiotics, probiotics and immunity system stimulants for optimal egg production. Feed tailored specifically for laying hens contains calcium carbonate, grit and Fertrell Poultry Nutri-Balancer (Monocalcium Phosphate, Organic Dehydrated Kelp Meal, salt, DL Methionine and organic vegetable oil with Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract; Active Dry Yeast; Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product and Dried Bacillus Licheniformis Fermentation Product).

Soy-Free

Soybean meal is the primary component in commercial poultry feed. This high-protein feed containing high concentrations of essential fatty acid linoleic acid has become the standard feed choice across most countries due to its affordability and availability – leading to widespread adoption as the go-to choice for poultry nutrition.

However, in nature chickens do not consume soy, nor is it part of their natural diet. Thus removing it from feed helps improve both their health and that of humans who consume their eggs and meat products.

Sunrise Farms farmers are conducting experiments this year with soy-free chicken feed to see if it can successfully rear healthy chickens without it. Their feed includes organic wheat, naked oats, barley and vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil. Sunrise uses a UK family run business which specialises in producing high quality compound livestock feeds to ensure each product provides optimal nutrition to ensure optimum performance from their flock.

Corn-Free

This feed is free from corn, which may be an allergenic ingredient for some chickens, instead featuring wheat, canola meal, milo meal, limestone, barley, sun-dried alfalfa from Redmond Conditioners (such as redmond conditioner kelp and diatomaceous earth) as well as calcium/grit supplements to ensure quality egg shells as well as organic flaxseed to boost their Omega 3 content in their eggs.

Barley is an integral component of many traditional poultry feeds, yet its inclusion can reduce phosphorus absorption. Therefore, including this grain may negatively impact egg production and feed efficiency; an alternative such as oats provides higher protein and less phytic acid content.

We suggest feeding this feed as an addition to their regular ration, rather than as the only source. Furthermore, offering healthy treats, foraging opportunities and fresh greens to your flock will keep them both happy and healthy.
