Purina Tropical Fish Food Powder

Powdered tropical fish food is a very fine food meant for fry (baby fish) and very small fish that cannot eat flakes or pellets yet. Use only a tiny pinch at a time, since too much clouds and fouls the water quickly. This page covers how to use powdered foods in general, because formulas differ by brand and product.

What is powdered fish food for?

  • Newly hatched or free-swimming fry of livebearers and egg layers once they are past the first live food stage
  • Small species such as tiny tetras, rasboras and dwarf fish
  • Fry in a grow-out tank when the babies are too small for crushed flakes

If you do not have a powdered food, you can crush a quality flake between your fingers into fine dust, but a made-for-fry powder usually has particle sizes better matched to tiny mouths.

How to feed powdered food

  1. Pinch up a very small amount, less than you think you need.
  2. Sprinkle it on the surface, or mix with a little tank water in a cup and drop it in so it spreads.
  3. Watch for a couple of minutes. Fry should be eating actively and bellies should look round, not swollen.
  4. Feed small portions 3 to 5 times a day for very young fry, then taper as they grow.
  5. Siphon uneaten food after feedings.

Powder sinks slowly and spreads, so fry that cannot find it may starve while the rest decays. Keep the tank small enough that fry can reach food, and use gentle filtration such as a sponge filter so the babies are not sucked in.

What to check on the label

  • Intended use. Make sure the product is made for aquarium fish, not for bait, chum or aquaculture production.
  • Protein and fat. Fry need higher protein. Look for a guaranteed analysis and named ingredients such as fish meal, krill or spirulina.
  • Freshness. Buy small containers and write the date you opened it. Powder loses vitamins faster than pellets, so use it within a few months.
  • Storage. Keep it dry and out of heat and sunlight.

If you want to know whether a food suits your specific species, look at the manufacturer’s page for the exact product. We cannot verify a particular formula from here, so check the bag.

Water quality is the main risk

Because powders are so fine, overfeeding is easy. Do small water changes daily or every other day in a fry tank, and test ammonia regularly. See our guides to the best foods for tropical fish fry and Purina tropical fish food for more.

Bottom line

Use powdered fish food in tiny pinches, several times a day for fry, and keep the water clean. Always check the label to be sure the product is made for aquarium fish.

This is general information. If your fish are sick or dying, ask an aquatic veterinarian.
