Midwestern Pet Foods issued a recall notice in December 2020 of certain lots of its Sportmix brand pet foods due to potential contamination with high levels of aflatoxin – a poison derived from Aspergillus flavus mold – which the FDA warns may lead to sluggishness, vomiting, diarrhea and jaundice symptoms in pets.
Missouri Department of Agriculture conducted tests on samples of recalled products and found they contained levels of aflatoxin exceeding FDA’s safe limit, an extremely toxic mycotoxin that poses severe danger to dogs – it has even been known to kill them according to their warning letter from FDA.
On August 17th 2021, Midwestern Pet Foods received a corporate-wide warning letter from the FDA for violations at its manufacturing plants. This warning letter detailed findings that toxic residue was detected in hundreds of batches produced at those plants and reported it.
