Comet goldfish have evolved in an environment suited for large bodies of water, so that’s where their ideal habitat lies. Since these large-sized goldfish can reach lengths of 12 inches or greater, they require plenty of room to swim around freely and explore.
They do well temporarily when kept with similar-sized, peaceful community fish like tetras and danios; however, small tank snails or shrimp that could become prey should not be kept. Their diet should consist of both dried foods as well as live foods.

Dried Food
Your Comet goldfish should receive all of its necessary nutrition from premium dry food. Look for high levels of protein, fat and digestive support such as calcium montmorillonite clay in its composition.
Comet goldfish tank-kept in aquariums are typically fed flakes and pellets, along with frozen blood worms, daphnia or brine shrimp from pet stores – often in foil-sealed cubes that can be broken up further into smaller pieces.
Frozen foods offer numerous advantages when feeding fish daily, whereas fresh food quickly decomposes in the water and may create harmful ammonia and nitrite levels, as well as release nutrients which encourage algae growth.
Vegetables can also make great food options for goldfish. Boil or steam them before feeding to them so they become soft for easy consumption – some options for vegetables to consider include peas, carrots, squash and zucchini.
Live Food
Comet goldfish thrive best when kept in ponds where they can swim freely among other fish, plants, weeds, and debris. Omnivorous by nature, comet goldfish can supplement their diet with meaty proteins like frozen blood worms, daphnia, or brine shrimp to boost health and happiness.
These frozen, freeze-dried daphnia (commonly referred to as water fleas) are easily digested by Goldfish and provide essential protein-rich nutrition while being low-fat products, helping promote overall good body function.
Hikari Show Impact range of feed is specifically formulated for fancy full-grown goldfish, but also suitable for juvenile goldfish. It contains powerful synthetic color enhancer astaxanthin as well as numerous health promoting trace nutrients; in addition, wheatgerm and an ingredient called “optimun” which are said to boost nucleotides which help fish fight disease and pathogens as well as reduce ammonia build-up – thus improving your fishes’ wellbeing and decreasing ammonia build-up levels.
Vegetables
Goldfish need a variety of nutrients in their diets. Vegetables like peas (peeling them to remove pesticides), lettuce or kale are great to feed your goldfish as snacks that help digest flake and pellet foods more easily.
Your comet goldfish may also enjoy feedings of live and frozen worms such as tubifex worms, mealworms, bloodworms or daphnia.
Apart from these items, your goldfish should also receive vegetables to provide essential fiber. When selecting fruits and vegetables to feed to them, make sure they are ripe, clean, soft textures with fine cuts that allow for finely cutting or breaking; steam or boil the veggies before giving to your goldfish to soften up some vegetables further before giving to them – alternatively use a vegetable scrubbing brush first to scrub off toxins before giving to them as this will ensure no harm comes to them!
Algae
Comet goldfish (Carassius auratus) are one of the most beloved breeds of fish in America. Hugo Mulertt, a government worker credited with selectively breeding this variety from wild Prussian carps in the 1800s is often credited as being responsible for selective breeding them as pets. Comet goldfish can be challenging yet rewarding to raise.
Comet fish are omnivorous fish, feeding on both plant-based foods as well as animal proteins like bloodworms, brine shrimp and small insects. High-quality dried foods with all of the necessary vitamins for comets would be most suitable but you could also offer live foods like boiled green peas.
Living plants can make your tank even more attractive while also contributing to oxygenation and nitrate removal. A quality aquarium fertilizer such as Hikari’s Goldfish Fancy food range will benefit your fish by providing essential vitamins and minerals essential for their healthy scales, eyesight, growth and immune systems.
