Trill is a long-running brand of packaged pet-bird food that sells canary seed mixes in several markets. A canary seed mix like this can be a fine daily base, but no seed mix is nutritionally complete on its own, so it should be paired with fresh foods.
What to Look For in Any Canary Seed Mix
Formulas and sizes differ by country and change over time, so read the label on the bag in your hands rather than relying on a review. A good canary mix generally has:
- Plain canary seed as the main ingredient, plus small seeds such as rapeseed, niger, flax or millet for variety.
- A clear ingredient list with no mystery fillers or artificial colors.
- Fresh seed: bright, clean, and not dusty, with a best-before date well ahead.
- Added vitamins and minerals if the label says so, though these do not replace fresh food.
How to Feed It
Give a measured amount each day and watch what your bird actually eats. Canaries often pick out favorites and leave the rest, so top up only what has been eaten, and blow the empty husks off the dish daily. Offer fresh water every day and a cuttlebone for calcium.
Add fresh variety as well: chopped leafy greens most days, a little fruit now and then (see fruits and vegetables for canaries), and egg food in breeding and molting seasons (our homemade egg food guide shows how). Many avian vets also recommend formulated pellets as part of the diet; see our canary pellet food article.
Storing Seed
Keep seed in an airtight container in a cool, dry place and buy smaller bags that you will use within a month or two. Throw out seed that smells musty, looks clumpy, or has webbing or moths in it.
Bottom Line
Trill canary seed mixes are one of many everyday seed options. Whichever brand you choose, check the label, keep the seed fresh, and round out the diet with greens, pellets and clean water. Ask an avian vet if you are unsure what is right for your bird.
