Fleas can cause your cat a great deal of discomfort and they could even be harmful. Not only do they spread conditions like flea allergic dermatitis and tapeworms, but they are also capable of spreading Bartonella–the organism responsible for cat scratch disease in humans–which could potentially spread throughout your home.
To protect your cat from fleas, the best solution is to use a vet-approved flea treatment. These come in various forms such as shampoos, sprays, dips, bombs, powders, spot-ons, orals, collars, combs and injections that have been approved by the vet.

Revolution Plus
Revolution Plus is a vet flea treatment designed to protect your cat from fleas, ticks, ear mites, lice, roundworms and hookworms. It’s an easy-to-apply topical solution suitable for cats and kittens from eight weeks old up to 2.8lbs in weight.
It contains two antiparastics, selamectin (from the avermectin class), and sarolaner, an insecticide. Together these ingredients work to effectively kill various invertebrate parasites by paralysis and death.
Apply Revolution Plus directly onto your cat’s skin once a month. To do this, part the hair on their base of neck between the shoulder blades and insert the tip of the tube into their skin.
Comfortis
Comfortis is an FDA-approved chewable, beef-flavored tablet that effectively kills fleas and keeps them away for one month. It begins working within 30 minutes and becomes fully effective within 4 hours after administration.
Spinosad, the active ingredient in this product, causes excitation of a flea’s nervous system and eventually results in paralysis and death. It has been approved for use on dogs and cats 14 weeks of age or older.
Comfortis should be administered monthly in combination with a heartworm and intestinal worm medication (excluding tapeworm). If vomiting occurs after taking Comfortis, administer another full dose.
Bravecto
Bravecto is a vet flea treatment for cats that provides protection for up to 3 months with just one chew or topical dose. Fluralaner, the active ingredient, quickly penetrates tissue fluids beneath your cat’s skin so when fleas and ticks feed on your feline friend, they ingest the medication and succumb.
Bravecto offers superior effectiveness to other vet flea treatments when it comes to both adult fleas and ticks, as evidenced by a U.S. field study that demonstrated how one dose of Bravecto reduced flea infestations by more than 93%.
It treats and controls four tick species, such as the black-legged tick (deer tick), American dog tick, brown dog tick and lone star tick. After 24 hours of administration it kills ticks within 24 hours and prevents re-infestations for 12 weeks.
Seresto
Seresto is a veterinarian-grade flea treatment for cats that provides up to 8 months of protection from parasites. It contains two active ingredients – flumethrin and imidacloprid – which work together to eradicate fleas and ticks while preventing future infestations.
It has a unique matrix that releases chemicals slowly in controlled doses, working within your cat’s hair coat to cover their entire skin surface and repel fleas and ticks through contact (no biting required).
These collars are non-systemic, which means they won’t enter your pet’s bloodstream like some oral flea prevention methods do. As such, they’re generally safe for most pets and very few experience systemic reactions to Seresto’s chemicals.
CAPSTAR
Capstar is a veterinarian-grade flea treatment for cats that kills fleas and fly larvae within 30 minutes after administration. Nitenpyram, the active ingredient in Capstar, works quickly to eliminate pests.
This tablet is easy to administer and safe for nursing or pregnant pets. It can be given daily at an interval of 24 hours for flea control.
This fast-acting flea treatment begins to kill fleas within 30 minutes of administration and continues for 24 hours. A single dose should eliminate all adult fleas on your pet.
Capstar tablets effectively kill adult fleas and fly larvae (maggots) on dogs and cats, without risk to pregnant or nursing pets. While some pets may experience temporary scratching as the fleas die, this is not a reaction to the medication itself.
