Turtle diets vary depending on their species, with some species opting for carnivorous eating habits while others consume both plants and animals as sources of sustenance.
Pet turtles must receive a balanced diet free from human-processed foods like bread. Green sea turtles tend to become herbivorous as adults while hawksbills possess bird-like beaks to reach crevices on coral reefs and feast upon sea sponges.

Vegetables
Turtles tend to be opportunistic feeders in nature and will consume whatever is readily available, such as leafy greens, flowers or insects or fish. As such, their diet consists of diverse food items.
Turtle diets should consist of plant-based foods like lettuce, kale and romaine; vegetables such as carrots, peppers, potatoes, zucchini and corn; as well as non-toxic aquatic plants like water hyacinth and duckweed that don’t pose any harm.
Fruit should be provided in moderation, including low-sugar options like kiwi, apples, bananas and strawberries. All produce should be thoroughly washed before being fed to turtles to reduce any risks from chemicals or bacteria being inhaled by your turtle.
Fruit
Turtles are predators in their natural environment and also act as scavengers, feeding on insects and organisms that pose threats to larger animals. Turtles help maintain an eco-system balance by eating insects that pose threats.
Fruit should comprise only a minor part of your pet turtle’s diet due to being less nutritionally dense than vegetables. Some good fruits to feed your turtle include figs, strawberries, bananas, apples and pears.
Be careful to avoid overfeeding your turtle with meat as this could lead to obesity. In particular, avoid feeding it iceberg lettuce, cloves of garlic and spicy peppers which could potentially harm them. Wash all produce before offering to your turtle; and avoid giving any fried or fatty food that contain harmful toxins that could harm them.
Insects
Turtles are fascinating species to observe whether in your local pond or deep ocean. Being among the oldest living creatures on Earth, these reptiles can grow quite large depending on their species of choice.
Turtles in the wild are omnivorous animals, feeding on both plant-based food and animal matter. Although many turtles evolved from carnivorous ancestors, green sea turtles, for instance, consume jellyfish, algae and fish as part of their omnivorous diet – their mouths and jaws being specially designed to accommodate such an approach to eating.
Box turtles, on the other hand, are herbivorous animals that consume grasses, leaves, weeds and flowers along with fruits vegetables and insects as food sources. To maintain a healthy diet for your box turtle, ensure all foods you give him are freshly prepared and thoroughly washed to remove any chemicals or pesticides present in their ingredients.
Meat
Turtles can be found everywhere from local ponds to deep sea environments. These semi-aquatic or aquatic creatures feed on both animal protein and plant-based sources for sustenance.
Aquatic turtles feed on fish, invertebrates like snails and crickets, amphibians such as tadpoles, aquatic plants like water hyacinth and romaine lettuce as well as nibbling aquatic insects like mosquitos.
Pet turtles can be fed a wide range of foods, from drained sardines and cooked chicken, worms and moths to hot dogs or hamburgers that would not be offered as treats to other pets – however these types of treats contain excess fat that could pose health issues in turtles as well as not providing the essential calcium-phosphorus balance needed to create strong shells.
Fish
Turtles eat an array of animal-based food sources in their natural environment, including fish, snails, crickets and amphibians like tadpoles. Furthermore, turtles may nibble at anything they come across within their environment such as aquatic plants, leafy greens or fruit.
Turtles must consume a well-rounded diet in order to stay healthy and grow properly. Avoid feeding them processed meats such as breakfast sausage and ham, along with dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt that contain too much fat.
Noodles and bread should also be avoided as these foods offer no real nutritional benefit and may cause digestive issues in turtles. It is also advised that turtles not consume chicken or beef because these meats could contain bacteria, parasites and diseases which could prove lethal to their lives.
