Why sweet peppers are a great veggie

Guinea pigs need vitamin C from food every day because their bodies cannot make it. Bell peppers are one of the best vegetable sources of it, and they are low in calcium compared with some greens. Most guinea pigs love the crunch and the sweet flavor.

Which peppers are safe

  • Red, yellow, and orange bell peppers: sweeter and ripe. A good choice, but they carry a bit more sugar than green.
  • Green bell peppers: safe and slightly more bitter. Some guinea pigs prefer them.
  • Mini sweet peppers: the same as small bell peppers. Serve a slice or two.
  • Hot peppers (jalapeño, habanero, chili, cayenne, pepper flakes): avoid. They contain capsaicin, which irritates the mouth and digestive tract.

How to serve peppers

  1. Wash the pepper well.
  2. Remove the stem and most of the seeds and white pith.
  3. Cut a strip or a few bite-size pieces, about the size of a few thumb-length slices for one guinea pig.
  4. Serve it alongside leafy greens, not instead of them.

Peppers can be part of the daily vegetable serving, but rotate them with other veggies so your guinea pig gets variety. Offer a new food in a small amount first and watch for soft droppings.

What not to serve

  • Cooked, pickled, or seasoned peppers (salt, oil, onion, and garlic are all bad for guinea pigs).
  • Stuffed peppers or leftovers from your own plate.
  • Moldy or wilted peppers.
