Feeding Canaries Red Peppers and Other Hot Foods

Mild, sweet red peppers are a good treat for canaries, but truly hot foods such as chili and cayenne are not a good idea as a regular food. If you want to boost your canary’s color or add variety, sweet red pepper, carrot and other colorful vegetables are safer choices.

Are Hot Peppers Safe for Canaries?

Birds do not feel capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers hot, the way mammals do, so they will sometimes eat hot peppers without complaint. That does not make hot peppers a good food for a small pet canary. Large amounts of any spicy food can irritate the digestive tract, and a bird that eats chili powder or spicy sauces may get loose droppings. Stick to sweet red bell pepper, remove the seeds and offer small pieces.

Paprika and cayenne powders are sometimes used in homemade color-feeding mixes, but they are not necessary and the amount should be tiny. If you are a beginner, color-feed with fresh vegetables and a quality supplement made for canaries instead.

Color-Feeding Red-Factor Canaries

Red-factor canaries have the genetics to produce red or orange feathers, but they need carotenoid pigments from food to show it. The pigments only affect feathers as they grow, so the time to color-feed is during the yearly molt, usually in late summer or early fall. Good natural sources include:

  • Sweet red bell pepper
  • Carrot, grated or finely chopped
  • Dark leafy greens in rotation
  • A canary color supplement, used exactly as the label directs

How to Introduce New Foods

  1. Offer one new food at a time so you can tell what causes a problem.
  2. Start with a very small piece next to the usual food.
  3. Remove any leftovers after a few hours.
  4. If droppings turn watery for more than a day, stop the new food and call an avian vet if it continues.

The Core Diet Still Matters

Peppers and other vegetables should be about a fifth of the diet at most. The rest should be pellets or a quality seed mix, a cuttlebone for calcium and fresh water. See what to feed a canary for a daily routine and the canary food list for safe foods.

Bottom Line

Skip the spicy stuff and use sweet red pepper, carrots and greens to keep your canary healthy and colorful. If your bird has digestive issues or stops eating, see an avian vet.
