Bravecto (fluralaner) is a flea and tick medicine that vets sometimes use against mange mites, but whether it is approved for mange depends on your country, and only your vet should decide. In the United States the label covers fleas and ticks; use for sarcoptic or demodectic mange is often “extra-label,” meaning your vet prescribes it on their own judgment. In the European Union, Bravecto chews are labeled for Sarcoptes and Demodex mite infestations in dogs.
What is mange?
Mange is a skin disease caused by mites. The two common types in dogs are:
- Sarcoptic mange (scabies): intensely itchy, contagious to other dogs and can cause temporary itching in people. Common signs are hair loss, crusty ears and elbows, and constant scratching.
- Demodectic mange: caused by mites normally present in small numbers on the skin. It is usually not contagious and often appears in puppies or dogs with weak immune systems.
How Bravecto works
Bravecto’s active ingredient, fluralaner, is in a class called isoxazolines. It over-stimulates the nervous system of fleas, ticks and mites, so they die after feeding on a treated dog. Studies, including a field trial in client-owned dogs, found that fluralaner given by mouth or applied to the skin reduced sarcoptic mite infestations and improved skin lesions.
Why a vet visit comes first
- Diagnosis. Mange looks like allergies, fungal infections and bacterial skin infections. A skin scraping or other test confirms the cause.
- Dose and schedule. Do not guess. Your vet picks the product, the dose by weight, and whether repeat treatment is needed. We do not list doses here.
- Safety. Isoxazoline products have a warning about possible neurologic side effects such as muscle tremors, unsteadiness or seizures in some dogs, especially those with a seizure history. Tell your vet if your dog has ever had seizures.
Side effects to watch for
Most dogs tolerate it, but some have vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite or lethargy. Call your vet right away if your dog has tremors, seizures, severe vomiting or any sudden change in behavior.
Helping your dog recover at home
- Wash bedding in hot water and vacuum floors and furniture.
- Keep an infected dog away from other pets until your vet says it is safe.
- Do not use home remedies such as motor oil or bleach, which can burn skin.
- Feed a complete, quality diet to support skin and immune health.
What about cats?
Cats have their own products and different mites. Do not give a cat a dog product. Ask your vet.

Bottom Line
Bravecto can help in some mange cases, but it is a prescription-level decision. Get a diagnosis first and let your vet choose the product and schedule.
