In the wild, snakes and other reptiles enjoy a wide variety of diets. They feed on insects, earthworms, frogs, and fish. However, they have to vary their diets to keep their diet diverse and balanced. Live prey and other foods are excellent sources of protein.

Reptiles and amphibians
Although reptiles and amphibians are vital components of the ecosystem, they are often misunderstood and feared. To address this problem, researchers conducted a study on student conceptions of the two groups. They used questionnaires and in-depth interviews to determine how students characterized the two groups. They found significant correlations between students’ conceptions of the two groups.
Herbivorous reptiles and amphibians should not be fed a diet high in starches. They should be fed a diet consisting of grasses, pellets, and green leafy vegetables.
Fish
Fish is a good alternative food for snakes, and it can be found in many varieties. Some species are better suited to fish than others, so be sure to choose a fish that is appropriate for your snake’s size and health. However, it is not advisable to feed your snake live fish. Dead fish is a better option, as they are easier to digest and don’t need any additional care. If your snake is an aquatic species, you can also offer other types of food, including insects, worms, and rodents.
Fish are good alternatives to rodents for many snakes. In particular, American Mosquito fish (Gambusia holbrooki) and various introduced guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are excellent snake food. The best time to catch them is in late summer, when their population peaks. A couple of hours spent near a decent pond can yield hundreds of adult fish, equivalent to several newborn mice. A small pond can provide enough fish to feed your snakes for a year.
Insects
Insects are a great alternative food for snakes. These tiny creatures are easy to source and are inexpensive to buy. Insects are also a natural food source for many snake species. Although most snakes eat insects, they should not be the primary source of food for your pet. Unlike birds, snakes prefer a more substantial diet, and insects are not a good choice for all snake species.
Some snakes prefer insects, but others will eat rodents, lizards, and frogs. Most snakes will eat insects as a snack, and many will start eating insects when they are young before moving on to larger prey. Moreover, many snake species can eat insects with little difficulty.
Live prey
Feeding snakes live prey is a controversial issue. Some reptile keepers choose to provide their snakes with natural items, while others avoid feeding live prey at all costs. Live prey are dangerous to reptiles, and can inflict serious wounds. It is recommended to purchase pre-killed prey instead, to prevent your snake from being harmed.
Aside from being unsanitary, live prey can also pose a danger to your snake. Since the rodents are trying to live, they may scratch and bite your snake. These injuries can cause infections and costly vet bills.
White meat
If you’re fed up with your snake’s diet, consider offering it a change. Snakes are predators and require a high protein diet to thrive. White meat, such as chicken, is an excellent alternative to live food. The meat contains more than 60 grams of protein per 300 grams. Some snake breeds even consume chicken in its raw form, but this doesn’t contain all the nutrients your snake needs.
Eggs are another food source. Snakes are known to prefer eggshells over other foods. This is because their skulls are specially adapted to feed on large prey. In order to eat eggs, snakes must eat various species of birds. Standard chicken eggs won’t work for these reptiles, so you must buy smaller bird eggs. It’s also better to buy fresh eggs if you can.
Chicken eggs
Eggs are an excellent alternative food for snakes and can be offered regularly or infrequently. Using eggs as a meal is best done for the juvenile stage and is unlikely to be harmful to an adult snake. Eggs have a distinct smell similar to a bird’s nest.
If you don’t want to give your snake eggs, simply gather them up and place them somewhere that will be inaccessible to them. This will discourage snakes from feeding on the eggs and also help them find food elsewhere.
