Goldfish may occasionally consume tropical fish food as part of their diet, however this should not become their staple source. The main problem lies in its protein-rich nature which exceeds what goldfish require to remain healthy and thrive.
Goldfish tend to prefer low-water environments for feedings while tropical species often favor foods which float at the surface of the water.

Fish Food
Goldfish require a diet rich in proteins and low in fats. Due to their slower metabolism than other fish species, goldfish require feeding less frequently and other fish food may lead to nutritional deficiency and illness in them if fed too frequently – other foods should only be used as emergency replacement or when you go away on vacation to ensure your goldfish don’t perish!
Tropical fish flakes won’t harm your goldfish, but they might not provide all of the essential nutrients they require. You could try adding daphnia (brine shrimps), worms and frozen (fully thawed) fish as alternatives; all will provide essential vitamins to ensure vibrant colors remain.
Shrimp
Goldfish can safely consume tropical fish food, but should only receive small portions. Their digestive systems may not be equipped to handle eating too much protein in one sitting.
Goldfish should ideally receive a diet composed of vegetables, fruit, algae wafers, pellets or gel foods as well as some protein from fish flakes to balance out their diet.
Be cautious not to feed your goldfish bread as this will bloat their stomach and lead to digestive issues. Dairy products, as they lack the enzyme lactase needed to break down milk proteins, should also be avoided; cheese should never be given either, as this could lead to digestive problems for your goldfish. For optimal health, choose fish flakes, fruit or vegetable pellets or gel foods like Repashy instead.
Cichlid Food
Cichlid fish species differ in terms of nutritional requirements from other fish species, with Cichlids having specific requirements that differ significantly. Their diet should contain high levels of proteins but no excess fats which could lead to gill disease. There are foods specifically tailored for Cichlids with appropriate levels of both fats and proteins as well as essential vitamins and minerals to ensure your pet fish remains healthy.
Other than cichlid food, you may also feed your pet fish vegetables commonly found in kitchens – provided they don’t contain seeds or shells that might hurt its digestive system.
Goldfish are omnivorous fish that feed on both plant- and animal-based food to thrive, so they require both plant- and animal-based foods in their diet to thrive. A diet consisting of high-quality tropical fish flakes or pellets as well as fresh or frozen vegetables should be given regularly, along with brine shrimp or water fleas as live animal-based food sources.
Other Fish
Goldfish are omnivorous fish, meaning that they consume almost everything that enters their mouth, including other goldfish. To prevent accidentally swallowing of one fish by another in an aquarium environment, only keep similar-sized goldfish together to minimize risks of accidental swallowing.
Tropical fish food designed for bottom feeders like guppies or tetras is appropriate for goldfish, while floating pellet foods may cause them to swallow too much air, possibly leading to swim bladder issues. Soaking flake-shaped food or pellets in water for several minutes before adding them may reduce gulping while helping sinking and sinking faster.
Goldfish food should provide a nutritional balance that includes proteins, carbohydrates and other key elements essential for healthful growth of goldfish. Furthermore, dyes and preservatives which could harm or even kill goldfish should also be freed of harm or death causing preservatives in it – so while it is okay to occasionally feed your goldfish tropical fish food it would be wiser to opt for specifically designed goldfish foods instead.
