Sorting cow herd into smaller nutritional need groups
A small herd of oxen can be sorted into groups based on a variety of factors, one of which is feeding rate. Using feed rate as a guide, we estimated the relative performance of each group by comparing pen level intakes of PSPS particle fractions. To test whether ration design accounted for this effect, we simulated rations using a variety of forage sources. The resulting rations were compared on a per-cow basis for seven days to determine the true effect of feed rate on feed sorting.
Although there is no single best way to sort a cow herd, a balanced approach involving a combination of individual sorting, herd size, and the aforementioned ration selection is a tried and true method.
Preparing a feed for Hanwoo
For this study, sixty Hanwoo male calves were purchased through a pedigree auction market and were housed in a beef cattle farm. The average body weight of these calves was 195.9 kg (+3.31) and they were 6.5 months old.
These calves were then randomized into three pens, each measuring 5 m x 10 m. Each pen was then fed with equal amounts of the total mixed ration (TMR).
Each pen was also provided with a Calan door. After each feeding period, two days of CH4 measurements were conducted. During the rumen fluid sampling, the concentration of NH3-N was not different between the breeds.
The results of the study showed that the TMR system generated more CH4 than the SF diet in both the Holstein and Hanwoo steers. However, the effect of TMR on the apparent total tract nutrient digestibility (ETND) of the animals was not clear.
