Bread does not provide chickens with sufficient proteins, making it an unsuitable food source for optimal growth and egg production. A diet high in proteins is necessary to achieve proper development and egg production.
Feeding dry bread as treats should only ever be given sparingly to your flock to avoid creating blockages in their crop (the first stage of digestion). Feeding them bread regularly could potentially clog their digestive systems. To be on the safe side, limit their consumption only occasionally.

Protein
Bread isn’t known for being packed full of proteins, making it seem like junk food to chickens. However, fed in moderation it can provide your flock with an enjoyable treat as it contains carbohydrates.
Bread consumption provides energy quickly to their bodies; so only feed your flock bread as an occasional treat and not as part of their regular diet.
Bread dough can form balls inside a chicken’s crop (an organ at the beginning of their digestive system), leading to blockages which are painful for their birds and potentially lethal.
Bread is extremely low in calcium, an essential nutrient necessary for egg quality. Overeating bread may result in fragile eggs which crack and break more often than normal.
Vitamins
Just as chickens need protein to stay healthy, they also require vitamins and minerals like folic acid, potassium, phosphorus, iron and magnesium in their diets to remain at their optimal best. Whole wheat or organic bread varieties contain more nutrition; however, even these should only be given in moderation to their poultry companions.
As with other treats, bread should ideally be provided to your flock in small pieces rather than whole slices, to allow them to enjoy its nutrition without choking. Molting season is the optimal time to feed chickens bread because their bodies require additional protein in order to produce new feathers. However, should you still feed it, ideally break or moisten it first so as not to block their crop – the first part of their digestive process.
Minerals
Owners of chickens often ask whether it is safe to give their birds bread as it offers many health benefits for both the chickens and themselves. Hens seem to love eating it and it adds variety into their diet.
However, it should be remembered that bread offers very little nutritional value to poultry. When consumed in large amounts it can even cause crop blockages; to facilitate digestion it should be broken into smaller pieces to allow both gizzard and crop to break it down more effectively.
Bread should only be given as treats, so as not to become the main source of nutrition for your chickens and lead to nutritional imbalances, digestive problems and weight gain. Spoilage or moldy food should also be avoided since mycotoxins produced may have adverse health impacts for birds as well as inhibit liver tissue, leading to decreased egg production. Furthermore, avocado pits contain persin which is toxic for them.
Fiber
Chickens require fiber for good health. It helps them absorb essential vitamins and minerals, maintain proper digestive processes, and manage blood sugar levels. Bread provides significant amounts of fiber which should form part of their diet; however, as it’s not an abundant source of protein it should only be used sparingly.
Feeding chickens bread can lead to serious complications when digested by their bodies; entire loaves often expand when eaten by birds, leading to them choking on it and possibly leading to crop damage, an essential process in digestion. This could potentially become dangerous as poultry use their crop as the first stage in digestion process.
Bread contains yeast and sugar that can lead to fermentation within a chicken’s crop, changing pH levels and encouraging bacterial growth resulting in an uncomfortable condition called “sour crop”, which is difficult and dangerous for chickens to treat. As such, only provide your flock with bread as a rare treat.
