Goldfish are very hungry fish that spend most of their days feeding off algae and foraging for sustenance in their tanks. When hungry, these aggressive swimmers may even turn aggressive – even attacking other tank mates in pursuit of food!
Feeding them can be tricky business; overfeeding should be just as much a concern as underfeeding. A general guideline is to only feed them what they can consume within two minutes.

1. Water temperature
Goldfish are opportunistic feeders, meaning they can survive without food for days without becoming unhealthy. If you plan on going away on holiday, enlisting the help of someone to feed your fish while you’re gone would be ideal.
Keep in mind that goldfish produce waste when eating, which could contaminate their tank water. Therefore, it’s wise to feed your goldfish small portions several times each day so as to prevent overeating and prevent your tank water becoming toxic.
An automatic fish feeder can help alleviate this issue and ensure your pet has access to nutritious food at all times. In addition to regular pellets, consider offering your goldfish some combination of floating and sinking foods for greater variety in texture and nutrition.

Goldfish are opportunistic feeders, feeding as long as food is present. Unfortunately, this constant feeding can result in overfeeding which creates large amounts of waste that pollute the tank, leading to illnesses or even death in some instances.

Though starving your fish may be unwise, temporarily withholding food may help minimize waste accumulation if going away on vacation or business related travel as this will minimize waste accumulation in your aquarium environment.
Feed your goldfish twice daily with balanced meals of flakes or pellets in two minute bursts; feed as much food as they can consume within that time period to prevent decomposition and water contamination from leftover food that remains. Also be sure to scoop out any uneaten food every day so as to prevent ammonia build-up which leads to illness and death for your goldfish. An automatic feeder may help ensure their diet is being met when you are away.
