Some remarkable stories have emerged recently of pet turtles that managed to go months without food. One was discovered under a pile of laundry after having been left for several months; another tortoise was trapped beneath the foundations of a home during renovations.
Turtles’ survival chances depend on their species, age and health. Under ideal circumstances, they may be able to go weeks or months without food and water if conditions are ideal.
Tortoises
Tortoises can go for weeks without food, depending on their size, health and age. They may even enter a form of hibernation called brumation where they conserve energy by spending less time active and eating less food.
Though this accomplishment is truly amazing for any turtle, it should not be taken for granted. A turtle that goes without food for too long may become dehydrated, lose weight, become sluggish or stressed out.
Keep your tortoises contented by offering them a variety of food items. For instance, fresh fruit or veggies like strawberries, raspberries and bananas can be enjoyed by some turtles.
You can also add dry turtle pellets soaked in water or juice to their diet. My friend even uses dandelions as a way of encouraging her tortoise to eat! For additional treats, offer small pieces of cooked bland chicken, beef, fish (dry or live) and boiled egg whites which are easy to digest and provide many essential nutrients.
