Storing Frozen Raw Food
- Keep it at 0°F (-18°C) or colder in the freezer until needed.
- Store it in its original sealed packaging, or in a freezer-safe container if you open and portion it.
- Keep it away from human food, especially foods eaten raw, and on a lower shelf where it can’t drip.
- Check the “best by” date on the bag.
How to Thaw It Safely
- Refrigerator thawing (best): move only the portion you need to the fridge in a sealed container, on a plate or tray to catch drips. Allow plenty of time, often a day for larger pieces.
- Cold-water thawing: for faster thawing, seal the food in a leakproof bag and submerge it in cold water, changing the water regularly. Feed right after thawing.
- Microwave thawing: only if you will feed it immediately, using the defrost setting.
Do not thaw raw food on the kitchen counter or in warm water. Bacteria grow quickly at room temperature.
After Thawing
- Use thawed food within the time given on the package, usually a few days in the fridge.
- Do not refreeze food that has fully thawed unless the package says it is okay.
- Throw away uneaten food left in the bowl after about 30 minutes, or sooner if it is warm in the room.
Keeping Your Kitchen Safe
- Wash your hands with soap and warm water after handling raw food, bowls or pets right after meals.
- Clean cutting boards, utensils and counters with hot soapy water, then disinfect.
- Wash pet bowls after each meal.
- Keep young children and anyone with a weak immune system away from raw food prep.
