Leachie Geckos are territorial
A Leachie Gecko’s diet consists of a combination of fruit and insects. It will also eat other small lizards. This omnivore requires a balanced diet and live feeds. They prefer foods that are ripe. However, some commercial foods are also acceptable.
Leachie Geckos are native to New Caledonia, which lends the species its name “giant”. They can grow to about 17 inches in length. They are divided into two subspecies – Rhacodactylus leachianus henkeli and Rhacodactylus leachiana. Both species are similar but are slightly different in appearance.
While Leachies are excellent pets, they can be territorial and aggressive. They may growl or bite if you approach their enclosure. Their territorial instincts make them not suitable pets for beginners.
They need a range of temperatures to thrive
Leachies are one of the largest types of geckos. They are brown, green, grey, or tan in color, and are arboreal lizards that live in the hollows of trees. They have bumpy skin and stumpy tails, and their vocalizations are distinctive.
The temperature of your geckos’ enclosure should be kept at a range of temperatures. While the average temperature in their habitat is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, leachies are most comfortable in a temperature range of about 80 degrees F. To achieve this, you should place a digital probe thermometer on the basking area. In addition, you should turn off your heat lamp at night.
Leachies prefer an environment with about 60% humidity. Misting the tank twice a day will help keep the humidity high enough for the leachies. Make sure the water bowl is heavy and has a large bottom.
They need vertical and horizontal spaces to roam
Leachie geckos are semi-arboreal animals and need both vertical and horizontal space to move about freely. They prefer trees and other sheltered spots to spend their time. Their habitat should contain thick branches to climb and a well-screened enclosure to keep them safe. They also require a substrate that can support their weight. Pothos plants are excellent options for this purpose. Bamboo poles and other sturdy decorations can also be used.
Leachie geckos need a humidity range between 50-60% and a temperature of 73-80 degrees. If you keep your geckos in a high-humidity environment, they may develop respiratory infections. In addition, they prefer mist during the night. A good terrarium with a front opening door is best. For best results, choose one with a high-quality thermometer.
They need water at all times
Leachies need water at all times, so it’s important to keep them in a tank filled with it. They prefer a substrate that replicates their natural environment, and you should change their substrate often enough to keep infectious microorganisms from growing. When changing the substrate, be sure to use paper towels. As a general rule, leachie geckos eat fruit and insects. However, you can also offer live feed to supplement their diet.
The Leachie Geckos have a long, thin tail. They are known for being territorial, so you must make sure the male and female are separate. Once you have done this, you can release them together. When copulating, the male will cluck and the female will lay two eggs. The eggs take 60-90 days to hatch.
They are easy to care for
Keeping a Leachie Gecko is easy, as long as you follow a few basic rules. They require daily watering and should be fed a varied diet of live insects and fruits. Leachie Geckos are omnivores, so they need a diet rich in protein. You can feed them commercially prepared mealworms, crickets, or roaches, or you can feed them live ones.
To start, the best substrate for baby Leachies is paper towel. This substrate is easy to replace and is easy to clean. However, paper towel may not be able to keep the right amount of humidity. You need a substrate that can hold the right amount of humidity and release it slowly throughout the day.
