Local fish clubs
Local fish clubs can be an invaluable source of support and information when it comes to aquarium keeping. Many organize raffles featuring equipment donated from manufacturers or local fish stores (LFSs) so as to benefit the club as a whole and its members.
Fish clubs come in all forms; from informal groups of friends getting together once weekly for pizza and drinks to large organizations with hundreds of members that meet regularly to discuss marine aquarium hobby, all must possess an overarching mission and vision which guides their activities and events.
MASNA recommends that clubs focus on education, ethical growth of marine aquarium hobby and supporting captive breeding/propagation efforts to ensure they provide services which satisfy a wider array of interests and meet members’ needs.
Pet stores
Pet stores are shops that sell supplies and food for cats, dogs, birds, fish, reptiles and exotic pets such as reptiles. Pet stores may be found both online and at physical locations and provide easy access to everything needed to care for these creatures.
Value should always be your top priority when shopping at a pet store, and quality is something you should keep an eye out for in any purchases of pet foods, toys and accessories.
Additionally, check each store’s policies regarding purchases and returns as these can differ significantly between shops. This will help inform your decision as to whether to buy from them or not.
Animal welfare concerns in pet stores range from inadequate housing and inadequate veterinary care, to insufficient housing options and improper environmental conditions for their animals. Some states even mandate pet stores to provide animals with a clean, secure living environment.
Mosquito larvae
These small wigglers, commonly referred to as mosquito larvae, are popular live tropical fish food for Koi and other carnivorous freshwater carp. These microscopic organisms feed on algae, plankton and fungi naturally present in water environments, providing an important food source.
Food supplements can also provide your fish with extra energy to grow; especially beneficial for smaller varieties like tetras and bettas that often succumb to lack of sustenance intake.
Mosquito larvae and pupae resemble any other insect larvae; they feature a large head connected to a thorax with an armoured body and narrow, wormlike abdomen which rests just under the water surface, as well as an acutely pointed tail tip that when disturbed causes them to wriggle downwards.
Mosquito larvae go through four instars before pupation, each time creating new pockets of cells which will later form part of their adult bodies.
Fruit flies
Fruit flies are small insects commonly found all over the world. These tiny brown or tan insects feature red eyes and measure between 3-4 millimeters long.
Home and other buildings storing rotting food items may become infested with these insects, most often during summer and fall when overripe fruits and vegetables linger on kitchen counters, but infestation can occur year-round.
Pests that thrive in moist, dark and foul-smelling environments such as drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles and cans, trash bags, mops and cleaning rags may attract these critters. They are attracted by drains, garbage disposals, drain covers and garbage cans as breeding grounds; drain cleaners often find these insects present when cleaning out drains or garbage cans.
Fruit fly larvae feed on decaying foods such as apples, oranges and other berries; some species also damage cultivated fruits and vegetables, leading to economic losses for farmers and homeowners alike. Rhagoletis pomonella apple maggots in particular can be very destructive for apples in northeastern United States, leading to discoloration, decay or even death of them as well as any number of other kinds of fruits or vegetables attacked by them.
