Layer Feed 16% Protein Pellet Poultry Feed
As chickens mature from chicks to pullets and beyond, their nutritional needs change as they reach laying age. Their protein needs decrease while calcium intake should increase accordingly to support egg production – thus the need for high quality layer feed.
Layer feed contains just the right balance of essential vitamins and minerals to help your hens reach their full potential. With 16% protein content and key vitamins and minerals that support egg production, layer feed comes in various forms such as pellets, crumbles or mash which each offer essential dietary benefits for egg production.
Note that while layer feed is suitable for hens, roosters should receive separate chicken food containing higher levels of protein to prevent competing over the same nutrients and thus cannibalism occurring. All feeds should include labeling with their intended species as well as guaranteed analysis results and guaranteed minimum nutrient levels for complete transparency.
Egg Layer Feed
Good quality egg layer feed is designed to assist hens from 16 weeks of age in producing plenty of healthy eggs. Hens rely on a balance of proteins and calcium in order to stay healthy during laying.
Layer feed should contain at least 18% protein and at least 3.25 percent calcium; these high levels of calcium help hens produce strong egg shells which protect their precious eggs inside.
Homemade layer feed offers many people the freedom to customize the ingredients and protein levels as desired. Most recipes for homemade layer feed will combine grains (such as corn and soybean meal) with seeds, legumes and peas; supplements may include brewer’s yeast or vitamin and mineral premixes for additional nutrition.
