Product Description
CHS Inc. of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota is recalling 67 tons of Payback brand feed due to high levels of magnesium. Feed containing excessive levels of magnesium can lead to acute magnesium toxicosis in animals causing diarrhea and reduced feed intake; affected products were distributed throughout Wyoming and Montana.
Payback feed offers smart nutrition and expert services to help any farmer succeed with raising chickens for farmer’s markets or larger commercial operations. Each product is specifically formulated to maximize performance and production; shell grit (which looks similar to coarse gravel) can help add calcium into your poultry diet.
Ingredients
Payback is a brand of CHS, an agribusiness group owned by farmers, ranchers and cooperatives that provides products and services for supporting livestock and poultry production. Recently, CHS issued a voluntary recall of feed which may contain excessive levels of magnesium; excessive magnesium can cause osmotic diarrhea as well as decreased intake.
PayBack chicken feed comes in various textures and formulas. Some varieties contain pellets – finely ground grains designed to help chicks digest food faster – while some varieties also come as dry mash that resembles oatmeal and can be mixed with water to soften its consistency even further.
Scratch feed, composed of cracked corn and other grains preferred by chicks, is another type of feed commonly fed to birds as a supplement or treat. You may even find medicated varieties which contain medicine to prevent diseases in birds.
Feeding Directions
Quality chicken feed provides all of the essential nutrients, from proteins and fats, carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids and extra calcium and phosphorus for stronger bones in mature birds. When selecting feed that includes all these elements it will benefit both chickens and humans alike.
CHS Inc. announced in a press release that they are recalling 67 tons of Payback brand poultry feed due to high levels of magnesium content, as excessive consumption could cause osmotic diarrhea and reduced feed intake in animals, according to CHS Inc.
Feed Payback Hatch to Hen free-choice from day one until they reach egg production (18-20 weeks). When they are, start feeding Payback Egg Layer Ration instead and always ensure there is chick-sized grit and clean water available 24/7 for them. Store feed in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight in order to prevent mold growth. Avoid placing directly onto concrete or metal as these surfaces absorb moisture from the air. Whenever possible, store feed in a cold shed protected from moisture and vermin; for bulk feed storage it is advisable to use plastic bags or wooden pallets so as to reduce oxygen exposure and extend shelf life; freezing chicken feed may further extend this. It is helpful to thaw out frozen chicken feed before feeding to ensure maximum palatability and nutrition!
