Quiko Red Intense Review

Quiko Red Intense is a color-enhancing supplement for red-factor canaries and some other finches. It supplies a carotenoid pigment that can deepen red and orange feather color during the molt, but it does nothing for birds that lack the red-factor gene.

What It Does

Red-factor canaries cannot make red feather color from seed alone. They need carotenoids in the diet while new feathers grow. Color feeds such as Quiko Red Intense are made to supply that pigment. Products of this kind are commonly based on canthaxanthin, a carotenoid used in bird color feeds, but formulas differ, so check the label on your container for the exact ingredients and dose.

When to Give It

Color only changes in new feathers, so timing matters. Give the supplement during the molt, when feathers are growing, usually late summer through early fall for adult birds, and for young birds during their first molt. Giving it outside the molt will not recolor feathers that are already grown.

How to Use It

  • Follow the dose on the package. More is not better and can cause an uneven or overly dark color.
  • Mix the powder with a moist egg food or add it to the water, as the label directs.
  • Offer fresh water daily and replace any mixed food quickly, because moist food spoils fast.
  • Continue through the molt, then return to the regular diet.

Other Things That Affect Color

Genetics matter most: only red-factor birds can show deep red. A balanced base diet of quality seed or pellets, greens and clean water supports healthy feather growth. Stress and illness can also dull a molt.

Safety

Buy products made for birds, store them dry and cool, and keep to the stated dose. If your bird looks unwell, stops eating or has odd droppings, call an avian vet. For other seed mixes, see our Higgins Sunburst parakeet food review.

Bottom Line

Quiko Red Intense can help a red-factor canary show richer color if you give it during the molt at the labeled dose. It will not change a bird without the red factor, and it is a supplement, not a full diet.
