Birds love black oil sunflower seeds, with their thin shells making them easy to crack open by any seed-eating bird. Furthermore, these seeds tend to create less debris underneath feeders making cleaning much simpler.
Avoid inexpensive filler seeds such as wheat, oats, red millet, canary seed and rape seed which sprout easily and are frequently kicked from the feeder by birds kicking at it.

Product Description
Black oil sunflower seeds are an energy-rich food source that appeals to most wild birds that consume seeds, with thin shells making it easy for most birds to crack them open and providing essential fat reserves to help survive during cold months. This mix also contains safflower seeds with thicker shells which require more effort for many birds to open them – they’re especially beloved among cardinals and grosbeaks, though less so among House Sparrows or European Starlings due to spoilage concerns associated with sunflower hearts/chips which contain potentially dangerous bacteria.
White proso millet is a favorite ground feeder among quails, native American sparrows, doves and towhees. Additionally, House Sparrows and cowbirds tend to avoid it; therefore it makes a better choice than rapeseed or canary seed, both of which often appear in mixed bird feeds that attract House Sparrows and cowbirds.
This premium blend includes cracked corn, black oil sunflower kernels and tree nuts – but does not include wheat, oats, red millet, canary seed flax rye and rapeseed, which all serve as cheap filler seeds that sprout easily on the ground or under feeders.

Black oil sunflower seeds contain both fat and protein – essential nutrients for many wild birds. Their thin shells make them easy for most seed-eating birds to crack open, making this mix ideal for cardinals, finches, woodpeckers, titmice and other backyard birds alike. Made in America! This premium blend is also guaranteed!
Cracked corn, black oil sunflower seeds, white proso millet and peanut pieces are among the ingredients included in our bird seed blend. Wheat oats red millet and canary seed are cheaper fillers that few birds eat.
To maximize enjoyment, keep feeders out of the wind and under protective cover such as evergreens or low shrubbery, at least 10 feet from fences and railings that squirrels use as perches. Clean out feeders regularly and change out seed when it becomes dirty or uneaten – this way you’ll avoid wasteful overfeeding! For maximum enjoyment store your extra food in cool, dry places.
Product Weight
Black oil sunflower seeds contain high concentrations of fats and proteins to provide birds with enough energy during cold winter weather, and feature thin shells which make it easy for all seed-eating birds to crack open the shells – popular among finches, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers and cardinals alike! You can offer black oil sunflower seeds in either hopper, platform or tray feeders.
White millet and canary seed are two other popular choices of seed. Millet attracts ground feeding species like quails, native American sparrows, doves, towhees and juncos while it can also attract House Sparrows, cowbirds and blackbirds–species which may quickly take over your feeder and push away songbirds such as finches, nuthatches or cardinals from visiting. Therefore it may be better suited for finches, nuthatches or cardinals in which case millet should be avoided altogether.
Safflower seed features a hard shell that’s difficult for some birds to break open, making it popular with cardinals, grosbeaks and titmice as well as blackbirds (though not quite as strongly as with towhees or juncos). Safflower can also help combat problems with squirrels raiding feeders.
Product Dimensions
High-protein and oil-rich mix that attracts most species of wild bird. Black oil seeds (commonly referred to as “oilers”) feature thin shells that make cracking open easy for nearly all seed-eating birds – providing essential calories and energy needed during winter months. This mix includes striped sunflower seeds to deter House Sparrows and blackbirds from taking over your feeder. This mix does not contain red milo, oats, canary seed, rape seed or flax which many birds do not consume and which often lands under feeders or as spillage on the ground due to birds kicking out food from feeders. Instead it features white proso millet, cracked corn and wheat which provide essential benefits to most bird digestive systems and provides an economical alternative to premium bird feeds.
