Vegetable flakes with 6% Spirulina have been specifically developed for feeding herbivorous and omnivorous tropical fish species found in freshwater or marine tanks, such as Malawi Cichlids of the Mbuna Group, Live Bearers, Oscars and other algae-grazing fish species such as Oscars. Our Flakes also come packed with multivitamins, natural color enhancers and Advanced Yeast Extract to support digestion and intestinal health.

Nutritional Benefits

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a single-celled green algae (cyanobacteria). Studies have revealed it to be rich in raw protein, essential amino acids and vitamins and minerals. Spirulina contains seven major vitamins including A1, B1, B2, B6, B12 and C as well as beta-carotene natural color enhancer pigments and an array of trace minerals.

Spiruline may help decrease total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as good cholesterol levels, helping prevent build-up in the arteries and promote heart health.

HBH Veggie Flakes are specifically tailored for herbivorous tropical fish such as Tropheus species that require large amounts of vegetable food each day. Our recipe uses higher levels of spirulina and natural color enhancers to increase palatability, digestibility and minimize waste output while stabilised Vitamin C and Brewers yeast promote healthy gill and fin tissue development while lecithin increases color intensity and brix.

Color Enhancing Benefits

Spirulina is an easily digestible blue-green algae with an exceptionally high protein content, carotenoid pigments, essential minerals and vitamins – making it an excellent color enhancer for tropical fish. Furthermore, its proteins can be five times more readily absorbed than terrestrial meat or soy products.

Spirulina reproduces quickly, and can withstand drought conditions even in lakes or ponds that drain off quickly. Due to its growth in an ideal environment, Spirulina has earned itself a reputation as the healthiest food available – even going back as far as Aztec times when they used it as fertilizer (teocuitlatl), meaning stone excrement.

This food based on spirulina is designed to meet the daily feeding needs of herbivorous and omnivorous fish in freshwater and marine tanks, such as Malawi cichlids from the Mbuna group, rainbow fish, barbs, guppies, live bearers and livebearers. Spirulina helps regulate their digestive process while its high protein content promotes strong, healthy growth.

Health Benefits

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis or Arthrospira maxima) is an indispensable source of raw protein, vitamins, and minerals. Spirulina provides essential fatty acids as well as seven major vitamins (including B12 ) as well as many important trace nutrients.

Some fish species that ingest spirulina flakes have shown marked increases in reproduction, possibly as a result of its effect on carotenoids and vitamins that the fish absorb (e.g. ataxanthin).

Spirulina-based foods are recommended for tropical fish of all species and sizes, particularly herbivorous species like cichlids and angelfish, and some omnivorous ones like goldfish and koi. As it contains high quality nutrients essential to their healthy development and coloration, this staple food supports healthy growth and coloration in these aquatic friends. Available as flake foods, granules tablets discs with 5-36% of Spirulina content can be fed several times each day to fish of all shapes sizes and species!
