Higgins Sunburst Gourmet Blend Hamster & Gerbil Food is a muesli-style seed mix, not a complete pellet. It can work as part of a gerbil’s diet, but its seeds, nuts, and dried fruit mean you should feed it in measured amounts and pair it with a plain gerbil pellet or block.
What is in Sunburst
According to the maker’s listing for the 2.5 lb bag, the mix combines grains and seeds (millet, oats, wheat, corn, sunflower, pumpkin, flaxseed), timothy and alfalfa hay, peas and beans, nuts such as peanuts and cashews, and dried fruit and vegetables such as raisins, apple, papaya, pineapple, and carrot. It lists a minimum of 15% crude protein, 7% crude fat, and a maximum of 9.5% crude fiber, with added vitamins, minerals, DHA omega-3, and probiotics.
Higgins says the mix has no artificial flavors or chemical colors. Check the bag before you buy, because formulas change.
The upside
- Variety of textures and shapes keeps gerbils foraging and chewing.
- Protein and fat levels are in a reasonable range for a gerbil food.
- Added hay pieces and vegetables add some fiber.
The downside of seed mixes
Veterinary charities and small-pet food makers, including PDSA and Burgess, point out that gerbils fed a loose mix tend to pick out the tasty, fatty, or sugary pieces and leave the rest. That can lead to an unbalanced diet and weight gain. Sunflower seeds and nuts are very high in fat, and dried fruit is high in sugar, so they are best treated as occasional extras rather than a daily base.
If your gerbil picks out the same few pieces, offer a measured portion and only top up once the bowl is empty. Remove uneaten fresh food every day.
How much to feed
Amounts depend on your gerbil’s size and activity, and the package gives a range for hamsters and gerbils together. Many gerbil care guides suggest about a tablespoon of food per gerbil per day, so start small and adjust based on body condition. Scatter some of it around the cage so your gerbils can forage.
When switching foods, mix the new food with the old over 7 to 10 days to avoid stomach upset.
Round out the diet
- Offer a plain gerbil pellet or block alongside any seed mix.
- Give tiny portions of fresh vegetables a few times a week, such as carrot or broccoli.
- Keep fresh water available all the time.
- Skip citrus, grapes, onion, garlic, and chocolate.

Bottom Line
Sunburst is a tasty, varied mix that gerbils usually enjoy, but it is rich for daily use on its own. Feed measured portions, add a plain pellet, and treat nuts, seeds, and dried fruit as extras.
