Black Oil Sunflower
Sunflower seed is the go-to birdseed choice for birders and backyard songbirds alike, making an easy addition to backyard gardens and birdfeeding stations alike. All sunflower seeds originate from Helianthus annuus but various varieties produce different bloom sizes, flower colors, stalk heights and yields. Black oil sunflower seeds (commonly known as “oilseed” or “black Russian”) contain higher fat contents than their counterparts and feature thinner shells which make cracking them easier for small birds.
Black oil sunflower seeds are a reliable, easy-to-find mix perfect for bird feeders of any kind: hopper, platform or tray feeders as well as ground feeders – and make for excellent ground-feeding birds! Rich in protein, fatty acids, calcium, vitamin b-complex, potassium and iron content – many species of birds frequent black oil sunflower seeds including robins, Northern cardinals, Tufted titmice Mourning Doves and house finches! They form part of many popular bird seed blends too – so keep an eye out! Black oil sunflower seeds make for nutritious ground feeder mixes as well as individual.
Nyjer Thistle
Nyjer Seed (or Niger Thistle, technically) is a favorite among finch species. These tiny black seeds contain 30-40% oil content and are often seen feeding to sparrows, pine siskins and redpolls alike.
Although nyjer seed is technically not thistle, its shape and color often lead to confusion with thistles – prompting some bird food producers to label it with this name on packaging.
Nyjer seed can be one of the more expensive additions to feeders due to being hand collected in countries such as Ethiopia, India and Burma. Sterilization also adds costs; although attempts have been made at growing it here with dismal results.
Safflower
Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an annual flowering herb belonging to the Asteraceae family that resembles thistles, growing primarily for its oil and meal production. Safflower seed are small with high concentrations of polyunsaturates making them suitable for cooking – specifically salad dressings and non-heated dishes like sandwiches. Two types of safflower oils exist – one high in linoleic acid suitable for salad dressings while the other better suited for frying.
Safflower extract has been said to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, studies have demonstrated its efficacy at lowering cholesterol – more specifically LDL-cholesterol than HDL. Furthermore, Safflower may help prevent “hardening of the arteries”, lower blood pressure, and improve circulation by helping keep LDL-cholesterol at bay while raising HDL-cholesterol.
Research demonstrates that safflower can help people living with type 2 diabetes shed pounds while also maintaining blood sugar control, and its chemicals may also help lower triglycerides, promote hair growth and healing, as well as attenuate inflammation and pain.
